Adam Jay Federici (born January 31, 1985 in Nowra ) is an Australian football goalkeeper of Italian descent. He has played for Stoke City in England since 2018 and was considered one of the candidates to succeed Mark Schwarzer in goal for the Australian national team.

Club career

Reading FC

Before joining Reading, Federici completed trial training with Wolverhampton Wanderers , Bolton Wanderers and Leeds United . He signed with Reading in September 2005. For the second half of the 2005/06 season he was loaned to Carshalton Athletic . He was also on loan to Bristol City from August 26th to October 27th, 2006 , without being struck once.

In the 2008/09 season, Federici spent two months of the first half of the season at third division Southend United , after his return he moved to the starting line-up for the injured goalkeeper Marcus Hahnemann in December and completed 15 league games in the 2008/09 Football League Championship by March 2009 . He succeeded in late December 2008 in the game against Cardiff City in the sixth minute of stoppage time after a corner of the 1-1 equalizer. With his team he moved in fourth in the play-offs, but failed there prematurely at the later promoted Burnley FC . In the 2009/10 season, Federici established himself as a regular goalkeeper and played all 46 league games. The Australian goalkeeper reached the play-off final with his team in 2010/11 , but lost the game at Wembley 2-4 against Swansea City . In the following season , the team around regular keeper Federici was able to improve its performance again and secure the championship title of the Football League Championship . As the bottom of the table in the Premier League 2012/13 Reading rose directly back to the second division. Adam Federici lost his regular place in goal due to injury and unsatisfactory performance. After a season as a substitute goalkeeper, the 29-year-old managed to return to the goal of the second division team in the Football League Championship 2014/15 and played 43 league games. He achieved another success with his team in the FA Cup 2014/15 , when the club only failed in the semi-finals with 1: 2 after extra time at the first division club Arsenal .

Bournemouth AFC

After his contract in Reading had expired, Adam Federici moved to AFC Bournemouth on May 27, 2015 and signed a three-year contract with the Premier League promoted team. In the Premier League 2015/16 he played six league games and had to be content with the role of substitute goalkeeper behind Artur Boruc for most of the season .

After another season as a substitute goalkeeper at Reading FC, Federici switched to second division Nottingham Forest on August 31, 2017 .

National team

Federici came to Australia on two occasions at the 2005 Junior World Championships in the Netherlands. He was nominated for the Olympic soccer tournament in China in July 2008 and played the tournament as a regular goalkeeper.

On June 2, 2007 Federici was nominated for the first time for the senior team of Australia, in the friendly against Uruguay he was not used. Federici was nominated as a substitute goalkeeper for the 2010 World Cup in South Africa, but was not used.
