Marcus Stephan Hahnemann (born June 15, 1972 in Seattle , Washington , USA ) is a former American football goalkeeper . He played for English clubs for 13 years and participated with the US national team in the 2006 and 2010 World Cups.

childhood

Hahnemann's German parents emigrated from Wentorf near Hamburg to the USA in the 1960s because his father got a job with the Boeing company . He In his youth he was active alongside the football for American football , basketball , baseball , motocross , BMX and skateboarding .

Athletic career

Hahnemann decided to pursue football more intensively and stood between the posts with the local football teams during his school education. After playing at Kentridge High School and earning an MVP award , and later playing eleven straight games in one season at Newport High in 1988, he also played for the Falcons at Seattle Pacific University .

Hahnemann developed into one of the best goalkeepers in the country with the Falcons and won the championship in Division II of the NCAA in 1993, in his final year at the university . He set numerous records, including 46 games during his time there in total and 944 minutes in a row without conceding. During this time he also played in the U-23 youth team of Washington State and won two national championships with this team in 1991 and 1992.

He then moved to the Seattle Sounders and signed his first professional contract there in January 1995. The year before, he had already made his debut in the national team and came to three internationals against Honduras , Trinidad and Tobago and Jamaica , which was followed by the fourth appearance nine years later. In his first year with the Sounders in what was then the A-League, as the top American professional league was called at that time, he was voted into the best team of the season. He led his club to the A-League championship in 1996 and switched to the recently created Major League Soccer for the Colorado Rapids in 1997 . In Colorado , too , he quickly introduced himself after his debut as a substitute against Dallas Burn and became the goalkeeper there.

For the 1999/2000 season Hahnemann moved to the English second division club Fulham . There he was a substitute behind Maik Taylor from the start . After promotion to the Premier League and some appearances in cup competitions, he was only the third choice due to the purchase of the Dutch national goalkeeper Edwin van der Sar , so that in 2001 he was loaned to the fourth division AFC Rochdale and then to the third division FC Reading has been. At Reading FC, which had meanwhile been promoted to the second division and Hahnemann finally bought it after the loan deal, he was in goal in 46 games and led the club to the play-offs for promotion to the Premier League in 2003 . There the club was defeated by the Wolverhampton Wanderers on a return leg . After another season in which Hahnemann had injured his knee and was out for a few months, the club succeeded in the 2005/06 season as the second division champion of promotion to the top English division. Hahnemann was named Team of the Year for the Football League Championship by the Professional Footballers' Association .

On June 17, 2009 Hahnemann signed a one-year contract with the Wolverhampton Wanderers, who had previously been promoted to the Premier League in the 2008/09 season, with an option for a subsequent extension for another year. The Wolves took up this option after their class in May 2010. After a series of defeats, u. a. even against rivals Blackpool FC , he was no longer considered from November 2010. Hahnemann left the club after the 2010/11 season . On September 23, 2011, he signed a contract with Everton FC. There he was not used for the first team and left the club in May 2012.

He then joined the Seattle Sounders in the US Major League Soccer in September 2012 . He was not used in the first half of the year. On August 4, 2013 Hahnemann made his debut for the Seattle Sonders in a 3-0 win on matchday 25 in the game against FC Dallas . He came in the MLS 2013 season to a total of four appearances in regular league operations, in the 2014 season he was not used in the league. His only appearance was on June 25, 2014 in the fifth round of the US Open Cup against the San Jose Earthquakes . This was also his last assignment as an active player. Hahnemann ended his career at the end of 2014.

Others

Hahnemann comes from a sporty family. His sister Diana played college football at the University of Washington . Both he and Diana were looked after on the school teams by his father.

In addition to the US American passport, he also has a German passport, so that he was not one of the limited number of non- EU foreigners in English football and speaks German as well as English .
