The US soccer team is the men's national soccer team of the United States .
history
The United States played its first unofficial internationals against Canada as early as 1885 and 1886 . The first official game, however, came about 30 years later, on August 20, 1916 against Sweden . This was also the first game between two teams from different continents.
The USA achieved their best result at a soccer World Cup in 1930 when they advanced to the semifinals. Some British historians claim that the US team was riddled with players from England's professional league who were not native to the United States. However, the facts speak against this theory.
Despite a 1-0 win against England , the team did not make it past the preliminary round at the 1950 World Cup and did not qualify for a World Cup again until 1990 . They did not get any points at this soccer world championship, but a year later they managed to win the first CONCACAF Gold Cup , the North American equivalent of the soccer championship.
In 1993 at the so-called US Cup , the USA created a sensation when they defeated England, the motherland of football, 2-0. In the same cup they lost 3: 4 against Germany.
At the soccer World Cup in 1994 in their own country, the round of 16 was reached, which in the end was only just lost 1-0 to eventual world champions Brazil . In the preliminary round, Eric Wynalda scored a remarkable free-kick against Switzerland (1-1), and Pelé's secret favorite Colombia was defeated 2-1.
At the 1998 World Cup in France , the USA played together with Germany in a group and were bottom of the group without a point. Many blamed the defensive tactics of coach Steve Sampson for the poor performance, but above all because he used the naturalized French David Régis in the defense instead of the cult figure Alexi Lalas . Alexi Lalas criticized his coach before and during the 1998 World Cup and was right.
At the 2002 World Cup , a 20 year old boy named Landon Donovan played his way into the hearts of American fans. Portugal , one of the World Cup favorites, was defeated 3-2, against hosts and World Cup semi-finalist South Korea , the US team made it 1-1, while playing with the second team against Poland , the team lost 3-1. In the last sixteen, US President George W. Bush called and motivated the team against neighboring Mexico . The USA won 2-0 and Landon Donovan scored his second World Cup goal. In the quarterfinals, the team met the German team again. The game was just lost 0: 1 against the eventual runner-up, making the USA one of the many surprises at this tournament.
In the following years the USA national team won the CONCACAF Gold Cup three times (2002, 2005 and 2007). In 2003 the team reached third place.
At the 2006 World Cup, the Americans were eliminated with only one point after the preliminary round. A draw could be reached against the eventual world champion Italy . The goal for the USA was scored by the Italian Cristian Zaccardo with an own goal. Clint Dempsey was the only American to score at the tournament. This fell in the 1: 2 defeat against Ghana .
At the Confederations Cup in 2009 , the US national soccer team reached the final of an intercontinental tournament for the first time in its history. In the semifinals she had defeated the previously undefeated European champions Spain 2-0. The final game against Brazil was lost 3-2, although the Americans even led 2-0 at times. The prize money for 2nd place was the equivalent of around 2.3 million euros.
The team reached the final of the CONCACAF Gold Cup 2009 shortly after the Confederations Cup. In the final on July 26, 2009 in front of 71,196 visitors at Giants Stadium, she lost 5-0 to the Mexican national team.
In qualifying for the 2010 World Cup in South Africa, the USA qualified as the best CONCACAF team and became group winners at the World Cup with a draw against England and Slovenia, both of which were behind, and a win against Algeria, the record goalscorer Landon Donovan secured in stoppage time. In the second round, the team met Ghana. Before that, there was only one international match between the two teams, which was lost 2-1 on June 22, 2006 in the preliminary round of the World Cup . The 2010 round of 16 ended with the same result (after extra time).
At the CONCACAF Gold Cup 2011 the final was reached again, but in front of 93,420 spectators in the Rose Bowl of Pasadena despite 2-0 lead in the end again lost against the Mexicans, who turned the game around and won 4-2.
The Americans did better two years later. At the CONCACAF Gold Cup 2013 they reached the final again. In front of 57,920 spectators at Soldier Field in Chicago, they beat Panama 1-0 and won the title for the fifth time.
On September 10, 2013, the US team qualified early for the 2014 World Cup . On December 6, 2013, the US national team were drawn as group opponents Ghana , Portugal and Germany . On June 16, 2014, Jürgen Klinsmann's team won 2-1 at the start against Ghana, after Clint Dempsey gave the team a 1-0 lead a few seconds after kick-off and John Anthony Brooks after the Ghanaians equalized with a header in the 86th minute for the 2-1 winner hit. In the second group game, the team were already 0-1 behind against Portugal after five minutes with a goal from Nani , before Jermaine Jones and Dempsey turned the game in favor of the Americans and then in the last seconds of stoppage time the Portuguese equalized with Silvestre To accept Varela . In the run-up to the decisive group game against Germany, a draw would have been enough for both teams, who were tied on points, which brought back memories of the Gijón non-aggression pact . The United States lost to Germany 1-0, but the team celebrated progressing, as Portugal beat Ghana 2-1 at the same time, but the Americans had the better goal difference. In the second round, the United States were eliminated against Belgium (1: 2 a.s.).
