Jermaine Junior Jones (born November 3, 1981 in Frankfurt am Main ) is a German - American football player . The versatile midfielder began his professional career in 2000 at Eintracht Frankfurt and subsequently also played for Bayer 04 Leverkusen and FC Schalke 04 in a total of 165 Bundesliga games. From 2014, he continued his career in Major League Soccer with New England Revolution , the Colorado Rapids and Los Angeles Galaxy . Jones has been playing professional indoor football for Major Arena Soccer League club Ontario Fury since March 2019 .

Jones represented German selection teams at junior level and also played three games for the senior national team before he announced his move to the US association in 2009. With the US national team , he took part in the 2014 World Cup , the 2016 Copa America and the 2011 CONCACAF Gold Cup , and between 2010 and 2017 he played 69 international matches (4 goals) for the USA.

Club career

The beginning in Frankfurt

Jones played as a youth at the clubs SV Bonames and FV Bad Vilbel . There scouts from Eintracht Frankfurt discovered him . In 2000/01 he was in the professional squad of Eintracht Frankfurt and played in the first few years mainly for the amateurs of Eintracht. In the 2001/02 season in the 2nd Bundesliga, he fought for a regular place in the 1st team. In the following season, the midfielder was partially set up in the attack at Eintracht. He scored six goals in the league and another in the DFB Cup . Jones rose to the Bundesliga with Eintracht . There Jones was injured more seriously for the first time and only made five appearances in the storm center.

Bayer 04 Leverkusen

During the winter break of the 2003/04 season , he moved to Bundesliga club Bayer 04 Leverkusen on a free transfer . There he played for the Leverkusen amateurs for the rest of the season and became a top performer. For the 2004/05 season he made the leap into the professional team, but was only used irregularly.

Back to the roots

During the winter break, he returned a year later on loan to the second division club Eintracht Frankfurt . In Hessen he was retrained by the Friedhelm Funkel / Armin Reutershahn coaching team as a defensive middle player and was promoted to the Bundesliga in the 2004/05 season ; Friedhelm Funkel appointed him team captain there .

At the beginning of the 2005/06 season , Jones suffered from a hairline crack in his shin and was operated on. Jones therefore missed the 2006 DFB Cup final . When the symptoms increased following the first operation, he had to undergo another operation, with the metal plates being removed. The regular captain of Eintracht celebrated his comeback at the end of 2006 with his substitution in the DFB Cup game against 1. FC Köln .

FC Schalke 04

For the 2007/08 season Jones moved to FC Schalke 04 , where he signed a contract that was valid until June 2011. Due to his athletic style of play, he quickly established himself as a leading player in Schalke's midfield, so that the club extended his contract on March 31, 2009 to June 30, 2014. Because of the consequences of a hairline crack in his left shin , Jermaine Jones could not play a Bundesliga game for Schalke 04 in the 2009/10 season . He made his comeback on the 1st matchday of the following season in the 1: 2 defeat in the away game against Hamburger SV . Felix Magath no longer trusted Jones after poor performance and announced that he was no longer planning with him.

Loan to Blackburn Rovers

In January 2011 Jones moved to England on loan for six months to the Blackburn Rovers in the Premier League . For the Rovers he made his debut on matchday 24 in a 2-0 home win against West Bromwich Albion and was named "Player of the Game" after 90 minutes. He played a total of 15 league games for the club before returning to Schalke in July 2011.

Return to FC Schalke 04

At Schalke, he was initially on the bench with coach Ralf Rangnick , but was able to return to the starting line-up until the end of the first half of the season after changing coach to Huub Stevens . After an unsportsmanlike behavior on December 21, 2011 in the round of 16 game of the DFB Cup at Borussia Mönchengladbach - Jones had deliberately stepped Marco Reus on the already damaged left foot - he was "up for an assault against the opponent in the form of grossly unsportsmanlike behavior" blocked as of March 1, 2012. Thanks in part to strong performances from Jones, the Schalker team qualified for the UEFA Champions League . For the 2012/13 season , Jones formed together with newcomer Roman Neustädter a "double six" in defensive midfield, with Jones playing the more offensive part. After being an undisputed regular player in defensive midfield for a long time, Jones fell into a performance gap like the entire Schalke team in the 2013/2014 season. In the media, Jones was made responsible for the crisis at the time, shortly afterwards he was suspended from coach Jens Keller for a game . In addition, he got strong competition in midfield with the young talent Leon Goretzka , Dennis Aogo and the new transfer Kevin-Prince Boateng . Jones, whose contract expired at the end of the season, was finally informed that he had little chance of regular assignments. Jones then asked for clearance during the winter break in order to look for a new club with a view to participating with the USA team at the 2014 World Cup in Brazil.

Beşiktaş Istanbul

On January 30, 2014 Jones moved to Beşiktaş Istanbul in the Turkish Süper Lig after seven years at Schalke . He signed a contract until the end of the 2013/14 season and cost a transfer fee of 200,000 euros. An option to extend Jones' contract by 2 years, the club did not pull, so Jones left the club after six months.

New England Revolution

In August 2014, the pledged US MLS - Franchise New England Revolution Jermaine Jones. There he occupied one of a maximum of three places available for designated players per team .

Colorado Rapids

In March 2016, it was announced that Jones was joining the Colorado Rapids in exchange for a transfer fee and the Rapids' first round pick in the 2017 MLS SuperDraft .

LA Galaxy

Los Angeles Galaxy secured the rights to Jones in mid-December 2016 . Colorado received a first round pick in the MLS SuperDraft 2017. On January 18, 2017, Jones was signed by the Californians.

Ventura County merger

In July 2018, it made its comeback at Ventura County Fusion and was used in a game until September 2018.

Ontario Fury

After another six months break, Jones signed on March 12, 2019 for the professional indoor soccer club Ontario Fury from the Major Arena Soccer League (MASL). He scored on his debut in the final quarter and helped Ontario to a 5-4 away win over the Tacoma Stars. In the last five games of the season, the midfielder scored a total of ten goals and provided four assists, which promoted him to third place in the league for the average points per game (2.8 points).

National teams

Germany

After good performance at his new club FC Schalke 04 , Jones was appointed to the senior national team for the first time on November 9, 2007 by national coach Joachim Loew for the European Championship qualifiers against Cyprus and Wales , but had to participate shortly afterwards because of a home game against the Hamburger SV on November 10, 2007 to cancel the capsule injury suffered. He made his debut for the German national team on February 6, 2008 in a friendly against Austria . In May 2008 Joachim Löw appointed him to the provisional squad for the European Championship 2008 ; Jones was not on the final squad .

United States

In June 2009, Jermaine Jones announced that he wanted to play for the US national team in the future due to his disregard for the national team's trip to Asia by Joachim Löw . This change was possible because Jones had only been used in friendly games for Germany until then . Because he was out the entire 2009/10 season due to injury, he made his debut for the USA only a year later, when he was on the starting line-up in a friendly against Poland on October 9, 2010 .

With the US national team, Jones took part in the CONCACAF Gold Cup 2011 and scored his first international goal for the US in a 2-0 quarter-final victory against Jamaica on June 19, 2011. In the end, he finished with the team after a 2-4 defeat in the final against Mexico in second place. On January 21, 2012, he led the national team as captain in the 1-0 win against Venezuela .

Jones in training with the USA national team during the 2014 World Cup in Brazil

On May 13, 2014 he was appointed to the squad of the United States national soccer team for the 2014 World Cup by coach Jürgen Klinsmann . There he played with the same hairstyle and shirt number 13 as namesake Cobi Jones at the 1994 World Cup in the USA . On June 22, 2014, Jones scored his first goal at a World Cup in the group game against Portugal. Previously, the USA won the group game against Ghana , with Jones preparing a goal. Despite the defeat against Germany, you could qualify as second in the group for the round of 16. There they were eliminated 2-1 after extra time against Belgium . Jermaine Jones was used in all games in the USA over the full distance.

The 2015 CONCACAF Gold Cup missed Jones because of a groin operation. The USA finished fourth. The following year he was part of the squad for the 2016 Copa América Centenario . With six points, the USA became group winners, with Jones contributing one goal. It wasn't until the semi-finals against Argentina . The following game for third place was lost to Colombia . His last international match was on March 29, 2017 in a 1-1 draw against Panama .

Style of play

The two-footed midfielder is said to have enormous athletic skills. Jones wins a lot of balls in midfield and closes gaps in defense. He is best known for tough duels and unsportsmanlike conduct. His body-hugging way of playing football earned Jones many yellow and yellow-red cards throughout his career . After a kick against the then Gladbacher Marco Reus in December 2011 in the DFB Cup round of 16 , Jones was suspended for eight weeks. In January 2013, a four-game suspension against Jones, which he received due to a foul on Ibrahima Traoré the previous month, was reduced to three games. Overall, Jones had to leave the place prematurely twelve times in his career due to fouls.

Private

Jones is the son of a US soldier stationed in Germany and a German woman and grew up in Frankfurt-Bonames . He is not related to the soccer world champion Steffi Jones , who comes from the same district , but Steffi Jones' mother was the childminder of Jermaine Jones. His cousin, Wal Fall, is also a professional soccer player and is currently under contract with the Rochester Rhinos .

On September 9, 2007 Jones married his longtime partner Sarah Gerth , the daughter of the publisher Klaus Gerth and "Misses Germany" 2006 in Schermbeck . They have three children together, as well as two children from Sarah Gerth's previous relationship.

In the Eintracht Frankfurt Internet forum, Jones wrote several posts that were received differently by the fans. Particularly noteworthy here is the article entitled “Nothing but the Truth” (NadW), in which Jones wrote about his move to Schalke 04 and which was criticized by some as untrue.
