Roman Petrovich Neustädter ( Russian Роман Петрович Нойштедтер , scientific transliteration Roman Petrovič Nojštedter ; born February 18, 1988 in Dnipropetrovsk , Ukrainian SSR ; today Dnipro, Ukraine ) is a Russian football player . In May 2016, he took Russian citizenship instead of German . He stands at Dynamo Moscow under contract and after two previous appearances for the German national team since 2016 in the squad of the Russian national team represented.

family

Roman's father, Peter Neustädter, grew up as the son of Russian-German parents in what is now Kyrgyzstan . After the Soviet period, he was temporarily Kazakh and later only German. He was also a soccer player. Roman's mother was Russian and later naturalized as a German with the family.

When Roman Neustädter was born, his father Peter was under contract with the Ukrainian association Dnipro Dnipropetrovsk . In 1992, after living with their grandparents in Kyrgyzstan during Peter Neustädter's time at FK Qairat Almaty in Kazakhstan, the family came to Germany as a Russian-German resettler because their father had moved to the Bundesliga from Karlsruhe SC in Baden . After a year in Saxony , where Peter Neustädter played for Chemnitzer FC , he and his family settled in the Rhein-Main area in 1994 when he switched to the second-class 1. FSV Mainz 05 . There the father spent more than a decade as a player and later became the coach of the second team.

Roman Neustädter's younger brother Daniel is also a soccer player; he was active at TuS Koblenz , the Providence Friars in the USA and SuS Stadtlohn .

Neustädter is married and has one son.

Club career

1. FSV Mainz 05

In 1994, Peter Neustädter registered Roman with 1. FSV Mainz 05. Both father and son remained loyal to the club for years. When Roman had gone through all the teams in the youth department and was first set up for the second team of Mainz 05 in the 2006/07 season , Peter Neustädter was his coach. In the following two seasons Roman established himself as a regular in the Oberliga team and rose in 2008 as first in the regional league. In the first half of the 2008/09 season of the 2nd Bundesliga , he made his debut in the first team; he was substituted on six times.

Borussia Monchengladbach

Neustädter (2009)

For the 2009/10 season Neustädter moved to Borussia Mönchengladbach in the 1st Bundesliga. In his first season, in which Borussia Mönchengladbach finished twelfth in the table, he was used in two Bundesliga games. In the following season, in which Borussia played against relegation and finished 16th at the end of the season, Neustädter came to 24 missions and scored one goal. His team sat in the relegation against VfL Bochum through and remained in the Bundesliga. In the 2011/12 season Neustädter was used in 33 games; he gave an assist. Mönchengladbach occupied fourth place in the table at the end of the season and thus moved into the play-offs for the Champions League . He formed a double six with the Norwegian Håvard Nordtveit . He did not extend his contract, which expired on June 30, 2012, and left Borussia Mönchengladbach at the end of the 2011/12 season.

FC Schalke 04

For the 2012/13 season , FC Schalke 04 signed Neustädter. He signed a contract that ran until June 30, 2016. He made his debut for Schalke on August 19, 2012 in a 5-0 win in the first round game of the DFB Cup against third division club 1. FC Saarbrücken in the starting line-up. On September 18, 2012, he made his Champions League debut in the group game against Olympiacos . Against VfL Wolfsburg , he scored his first goal for Schalke on the 7th match day of the 2012/13 season . He was a top performer in the first half of the season and consolidated his place on the double six, mostly next to Jermaine Jones . He was the only Schalke 04 player to play all 17 first round matches over the entire season and scored three goals. From November 2012, his performance became weaker and in the second half of the season he was barely able to match the performances offered in the first half of the season. In the Champions League eighth-final second leg against Galatasaray Istanbul , he scored his first goal in this competition. Towards the end of the second half of the season he was able to stabilize in terms of performance and became part of the German national team for a trip to the USA .

Neustädter (l.) In the Champions League against Chelsea (2014)

For the 2013/14 season he was back in the defensive midfield despite the commitment of the talent Leon Goretzka . At first he played mostly alongside Marco Höger or Dennis Aogo , at the end of the first half of the season and the beginning of the second half of the season his partner was Kevin-Prince Boateng . In terms of performance, he was able to build on his strong phases of the 2012/13 season. During the first half of the 2014/15 season , Neustädter played, with a few exceptions, as a central defender. The new coach Roberto Di Matteo also relied on the services of Neustädter in a five-man defense chain. On the 16th matchday in the game against SC Paderborn 07 Neustädter scored the decisive 2-1. Schalke wintered in second place in the Champions League and ended up in fifth place in the league at the end of the first half of the season. The team also achieved this placement at the end of the season. Neustädter was rarely used , also due to the commitment of Matija Nastasić . Despite qualifying directly for the UEFA Europa League , Di Matteo left the club after a qualifying defeat on the final day of the match. Under the new coach André Breitenreiter , Neustädter was regularly used in central defense until the 8th matchday of the 2015/16 season due to the failures of Nastasić and captain Benedikt Höwedes .

His contract, which expired at the end of the 2015/16 season, was not extended.

Fenerbahçe Istanbul

The Turkish first division club Fenerbahçe Istanbul secured Neustädter's services for the following season after the European Football Championship in 2016 . With Fenerbahçe he was Turkish runner-up in 2018.

Dynamo Moscow

In early August 2019, he joined Dynamo Moscow .

National team

Germany

Neustädter is a two-time German U-20 national player . He made his only game for the U-21s in the Lobanowskyj Cup in Ukraine against Iran.

He played for the German senior team for the first time on November 14, 2012 when he came on as a substitute for the Netherlands in a friendly in Amsterdam . He was nominated again for an international tour of the national team in the USA, also because the players of FC Bayern Munich and Borussia Dortmund were canceled due to the Champions League final . In the game on May 29, 2013 in Boca Raton against Ecuador , he made his starting eleven debut in the national team and was substituted in the 66th minute for Stefan Reinartz . He prepared the 4-0 through Lars Bender .

Russia

In principle, Neustädter was eligible to play for five nations: Kyrgyzstan (father's place of birth), Kazakhstan (father had the nationality), Russia (mother's place of birth), Ukraine (place of birth) and Germany (had nationality). In the past, however, Neustädter had not tried to obtain additional citizenships and therefore only had German citizenships. In January 2016, he met with members of the Russian Football Association in order to be able to play for the Russian national team in the future , and then applied for Russian citizenship. He was hoping to participate in test matches in March of that year, but his application was delayed.

In May 2016 Neustädter, initially without a Russian passport, was appointed to the preliminary Russian squad for the 2016 European Championship in France . On May 18, 2016, he was finally naturalized by the Russian President Vladimir Putin and consequently included in the final squad. As a result, he lost his German citizenship at the same time , as he no longer wanted to wait for the examination of retaining German citizenship with a view to the tournament.

On June 1, 2016, he made his international debut for Russia when he came on in the 64th minute of the friendly against the Czech Republic . At the European Championship he was on the starting line-up for the first game against England. After that he was also in the first eleven against Slovakia, but was substituted at half time and no longer counted in the last game against Wales. With the last place in the group, the tournament was over for the team. He was in the preliminary squad for the Confederations Cup in 2017 called, but was not considered for the final squad. At the World Cup in Russia, Neustädter did not make it into the final 23-man squad. In the new UEFA Nations League he has been playing for the Russian national team again since September 2018.

Style of play

Neustädter is considered to be strong in running and tackling. National coach Joachim Löw appreciated his "very good technical skills" and his "overall high quality". His "incredibly good endurance values" are appreciated. He has good positional play, is strong at the head and can quickly recognize and anticipate game situations, but often looks inconspicuous and often underestimated by the audience. Richard Leipold wrote about him in the Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung : “In the coordinate system of football tactics, Neustädter has an eye for space and time - and for gaps that need to be closed. If he notices such a gap in the opponent, he knows how to withdraw in the service of the team and to stage his teammates. "

Although his strengths in defensive midfield are in the sixth position , he has been repeatedly used in central defense by various coaches in his career.
