At the age of four, Breitenreiter began playing football at Borussia Hannover and played there until 1984. He then moved to Hannoversche SC , before joining the youth team at Hannover 96 in 1986 . In 1991 he was appointed to the second division team, with which he won the DFB Cup in 1992. During his time at Hannover 96, he took part in the U-20 World Cup in Australia in 1993 and the European Junior Championships in 1990 and 1991. In 1994 he moved to the Bundesliga for Hamburger SV and finally came via Wolfsburg, Unterhaching, the upper division SC Langenhagen and Hessen Kassel to the regional division Holstein Kiel, where he was team captain . After Kiel's relegation to the Oberliga Nord, Breitenreiter was under contract with league competitor BV Cloppenburg from summer 2007, with whom he qualified for the West Regional Football League a year later . In the following season he could not achieve relegation with Cloppenburg. In July 2009 he moved to TSV Havelse in the Oberliga Niedersachsen-West . He ended his playing career in the summer of 2010 with the championship title and promotion to the North Regional Football League .

Trainer

Breitenreiter has had the Trainer A license since September 24, 2009. He initially worked as a scout for 1. FC Kaiserslautern . On January 2, 2011 he started his first coaching position at TSV Havelse in the Regionalliga Nord, although he had initially canceled the TSV managing director Stefan Pralle. He took over his former teammates in the winter break with 11 points, beaten last in the table and led them to relegation with 24 points in the back series. In the 2011/12 season he led the team in the top group of the Regionalliga-Nord in 5th place. For the first time in the club's history, they won the NFV Cup , which entitles them to participate in the DFB Cup . In the 2012/13 season, Bundesliga club 1. FC Nürnberg were defeated 3-2 afterwards in the first round of the DFB Cup. In the second round they had to admit defeat to VfL Bochum 1: 3. In the league, the team, which still consisted of pure amateurs, took second place, so the club submitted the license documents for a possible promotion to the third division .

On March 27, 2013, Breitenreiter completed the course to become a football teacher at the DFB Sport University as the third best of the year. The SC Paderborn 07 signed him to the 2013/14 season as head coach. After initial difficulties, he led the SCP into the Bundesliga for the first time in the club's history . After a year, the club went back to the 2nd Bundesliga with Breitenreiter.

For the 2015/16 season , Breitenreiter succeeded Roberto Di Matteo as head coach at FC Schalke 04 ; his contract ran until June 30, 2017. On May 14, 2016, he announced his early release during an interview before the last game of the season against TSG 1899 Hoffenheim. During the week he was informed of this by the new sports director Christian Heidel in a phone call, although Heidel should not take over the position until May 15, 2016. With Schalke 04, Breitenreiter reached fifth place in the Bundesliga and the intermediate round of the Europa League .

On March 20, 2017, second division Hannover 96 introduced Breitenreiter as the successor to head coach Daniel Stendel, who was on leave . At the end of the 2016/17 season , he rose to the Bundesliga as second division runner-up with Hannover 96. In the 2017/18 season he held the class with the team. On January 27, 2019, Breitenreiter was dismissed after a 5-1 defeat in the Bundesliga game against Borussia Dortmund. Hannover 96 has been on a relegation zone for seven match days.
