As a men's competition, it has been held by the NFV since 1956 and has been known as the Krombacher Cup since the 2010/11 season . The winner and, until 2018, the defeated finalist qualify for the first main round of the DFB Cup .
The field of participants consists of all Lower Saxon teams in the 3rd division and the regional league , all teams in the Lower Saxony Oberliga and the district cup winners of the previous season. Second teams are no longer eligible to compete after a reform of the DFB and NFV Cup. If the district cup winners of the previous season were promoted to the league, another team takes the starting place of the corresponding district cup winner; As a rule, this is the team that lost out in the final of the District Cup. Home rights are held by the lower-class team; in the case of class opponents, home rights are drawn.
In the 2008/09 season, the cup started with 41 teams. This fact was often criticized, because the odd number of participants in the individual rounds meant that numerous byes had to be awarded. Since the 2009/10 season there has always been an even number of participants, which circumvented this problem and bye tickets were only awarded in the first round. In 2009/10 40 teams started, in 2010/11 only 26. The merging of the Oberliga Niedersachsen Ost with the Oberliga Niedersachsen West to form the new single-track Oberliga Niedersachsen for the 2010/11 season is the main reason for the sharp decline in the number of participants.
In the 1954/55 season, the NFV held a previous competition. Since the Lower Saxony qualification for the cup competition of the North German Football Association could not be completed in time due to deadline reasons, the NFV nominated the participants in the North Cup due to their placement in the Lower Saxony amateur league . The qualification round that had already started was instead continued as the Lower Saxony Cup, the winner was VfB Uslar, who beat FC Norden in the final on July 31, 1955 in Nienburg / Weser 4-2.
From the 2018/19 season, the cup competition will be organized in two separate so-called competition trees. In one competition tree (Krombacher Niedersachsenpokal) the Lower Saxon teams of the 3rd division and Regionalliga Nord play a representative of the NFV for the DFB-Pokal of the following season, while in the second competition tree (Krombacher Niedersachsenpokal Amateure) the representatives of the Oberliga Niedersachsen and the four Cup winners of the respective NFV districts determine the other participant. The final of the amateur tree will also be broadcast live on ARD on the final day of the amateurs .
