The sporting roots of today's TuS Celle FC go back to 1921, when the clubs SV Niedersachsen Celle and Celler Sportclub were founded. Both clubs had their backing in the local proletariat , while the sporting figurehead of the city at the time, the SV Eintracht Celle, had more bourgeois-elitist roots. In 1924, SV Lower Saxony and Celler SC merged to form the 1921 Celle game association . The team popularly known as "21ers" quickly played its way into higher leagues and in 1933 was able to leave SV Eintracht behind for the first time.

The Celle Free Gymnastics Association , which was founded in 1899, had even older roots . This workers' sports club was banned in 1933 after the National Socialists came to power . None of the parent clubs made it into the Gauliga , which formed the top division in German football from 1933 onwards. This succeeded the WSV Nebeltruppe Celle , an association of the Wehrmacht . The team made it to the Gauliga Südhannover-Braunschweig in 1942 and became champions of the Gauliga Osthannover a year later after a restructuring . At the German championship , the military team was eliminated in the qualification against the eventual runner-up LSV Hamburg .

Post-war period (1945 to 1964)

On October 17, 1945, members of the game association and former members of the Free Gymnastics Association founded the Celle Gymnastics and Games Association . Contrary to the German grammar , the association was referred to by the locals as "the TuS", although "the TuS" would be correct. TuS found its new home on the former sports field of the Freie Turnerschaft am Neustädter Holz, where the stadium is today. In the early years after the end of the Second World War , the association benefited from around 25,000 displaced persons from the eastern regions of the German Empire . In addition, the TuS was able to win some players from the Nebeltruppe.

In 1946 the Celler had to play qualifying games for the newly created Oberliga Niedersachsen-Süd , but failed there at ATSV Nienburg and the Hannoversche SC . One year later, TuS was one of the founding members of the Hanover State League . There the Celler were runner-up behind SV Linden 07 in 1949 . The highlight of the season was the guest appearance at Hannover 96 , where 4,000 spectators saw a 2-0 win for Celle. At the end of the season the TuS was included in the newly created amateur league Lower Saxony East .

There the team caused a sensation and temporarily took over the championship lead in October 1949. A year later the Celler were the most goal-hungry team in the league with 113 goals. Both times it was only enough to place in the front midfield. Under coach Otto Schade, TuS was runner-up behind VfL Wolfsburg in the 1951/52 season . Against the runner-up of the western relay Eintracht Nordhorn , the Celle playoffs had to contest to participate in the German amateur championship . After a 2: 2 in Nordhorn, the Celler lost in the second leg on their own place with 2: 5.

In the following years there was a slump. First goal scorer Günter Meyer ended his career before TuS lost some top performers to VfL Wolfsburg in 1953. As a result, the team shuttled between midfield and relegation battle. With increased youth work, the Celler caused a sensation in the North German Cup in 1957. After victories over the first division clubs VfL Wolfsburg and Heider SV , Hamburger SV was eliminated in the semi-finals. The team trained by Klemens Heyduck included five eighteen-year-olds.

A lack of consistency in performance ensured that the team did not make progress in terms of sport. The situation did not improve until 1962, after the TuS was split up from the East to the West. Although the associated almost 5300 kilometers to travel away games represented a high burden, the team achieved third place. Since the runner-up, the amateurs of VfL Osnabrück , were not allowed to take part in the promotion round to the league, the Celler played against Leu Braunschweig for a place in the promotion round. Here the Braunschweiger prevailed. A year later, TuS qualified for the single-track Lower Saxony State League .

Between the regional league and the Lower Saxony upper house (1964 to 1985)

The TuS started successfully in the national league season 1964/65 and won the runner-up behind the amateurs of Hannover 96. In the following round of promotion to Regionalliga Nord , the Celler had to bury their hopes for promotion after defeats at Olympia Wilhelmshaven and against TSV Uetersen . Three years later the team was more successful.

As fourth in the 1967/68 season, the TuS only reached the promotion round to the Regionalliga because the third-placed amateurs of SV Arminia Hannover were not eligible for promotion. In the promotion round, the Celler delivered a head-to-head race with SV Friedrichsort , who were defeated 6-0 on the penultimate game day. On the last day of the match, the Celler made the promotion with a 6: 3 win at SV St. Georg perfect.

In the regional league, the team initially struggled and fought against relegation. Relegation in the 1968/69 season was only achieved on the last day of the game. Although TuS lost the game against VfB Lübeck in front of 10,973 spectators with 1: 2, they benefited from Holstein Kiel's 2-1 victory at Sperber Hamburg . Only through the better goal quotient compared to Heider SV , the Celler secured relegation.

A year later , the Celler, who remained 14 games without a win during the season, had to tremble for a long time to stay in the league. Only after Hannes Baldauf took over the coaching position in 1970, the TuS was able to establish itself in the midfield of the regional league. When Baldauf left the association in 1972, TuS got into a crisis. The new coach Emil Iszó fell out with the team, which triggered an internal revolution. At the end of the 1972/73 season , the Celler rose as the penultimate.

A year later, the team missed the newly created Oberliga Nord as fifth. In the remaining 1970s, the team played in the midfield of the Lower Saxony State League . In 1976, the promotion round was just missed, before two years later, relegation was barely made. At the end of the 1970s, a Westerceller mineral oil company became a sponsor. Already in the 1979/80 season, the TuS reached third in the promotion round , in which the team was last.

1981, the Celler secured the championship in the now Verbandsliga League called. The class jump was missed as third in the promotion round . Nevertheless, the team played a crucial role in the question of promotion. On the last day of the match, the Celler won against SC Urania Hamburg with 8: 5 and thus helped TSV Havelse to advance.

For the next season, the clubs signed numerous top-class newcomers, but ended up only in eleventh place with the quarreling team. As a result, the club had to save in the next few years and slipped athletically. At the end of the 1984/85 season, the TuS rose as the penultimate in the Landesliga Ost and was only fifth class for the first time.

From the province to the regional league (1985 to 2000)

Arrived in the national league, the Celler footballers found themselves in the shadow of Volleyball - Bundesliga MTV Celle . The turning point was the 1987/88 season when Jürgen Rynio took over as coach and Franz Gerber became manager. Both introduced new structures to the club and brought some former professionals into the team. In 1988, the Celler missed promotion to the association league only because of the poorer goal difference against the second team from Eintracht Braunschweig. The class jump was made up a year later.

As a newcomer, the Celler were able to win the championship straight away in 1990 and prevailed in the following round of promotion . 5,600 spectators saw the decisive 2-0 victory over VfB Lübeck . After a seventh place in the promotion season, it rumbled a season later when coach Rynio and manager Gerber fell out and both were fired from the board. Gerber returned after a few days. A winning streak in the second half of the season pushed the team to fifth. Only one point was missing for a possible participation in the promotion round to the 2nd Bundesliga.

The DFB had refused the club the license for the 2nd Bundesliga because of its financial problems. The football department then became independent as TuS Celle FC , while the rest of the club is now called TuS Celle 92 . In order to reach the 2nd Bundesliga, Gerber signed high-profile players, but the team only reached midfield positions and fought for a long time against relegation in the 1993/94 season .

From 1994 the TuS played in the re-introduced Regionalliga Nord. Thanks to numerous goals by strikers Hakan Bicici and Vladan Milovanović, the Celler were autumn champions in the 1995/96 season and came third at the end of the season. Despite the great success, the season ended with a deficit of 650,000 DM . For the following season the club wanted to give itself a new image and renamed itself FC Celle . The old club name was adopted again in 1997.

The club's financial situation remained poor. Still in the 1998-99 season , the TuS reached the sixth. In order for the association to continue to exist, the city of Celle had to undertake a guarantee of 300,000 DM. In the 1999/2000 season it was all about qualifying for the two-track regional league, which was missed by lengths as fourteenth.

Bankruptcies and elevator years (2000 to 2014)

The descent into the Oberliga Niedersachsen / Bremen plunged the club into a deep crisis. In the 2000/01 season , the TuS only just managed to stay in the league. One point was the lead over the amateurs of Hannover 96. In September 2001 the club, which was in debt with around 1.6 million euros, had to file for bankruptcy . The process ended positively for the association. Nevertheless, the team rose in 2002 as bottom of the league from the league. At Kickers Emden , the Celler even lost 0:11. After relegation, the club had to file for bankruptcy again. The insolvency administrator reported the team from the game operations of the Lower Saxony league . TuS was only allowed to play again through a petition for clemency . TuS rose again without a chance as bottom of the table, but managed to rise again in 2004.

After the narrowly won national league championship, the Celler beat TSV Helmstedt 2-0 and rose. The team was now able to establish itself in the Lower Saxony league and only managed to stay in the league in 2007 through the promotion of TuS Heeslingen to the Oberliga Nord. At the end of the 2000s, the club plunged into another sporting crisis. In 2009, the Celler failed just barely on relegation in the league now called Lower Saxony . A year later, under dubious circumstances, he was relegated from the Lüneburg regional league . Before the last day of the match, TuS was tied with TSV Etelsen , but had a goal difference that was six goals better and was on a non-relegation zone.

Celle won his last game against TV Jahn Schneverdingen 3-1, while Etelsen won 8-0 at MTV Moisburg . As a result, the Celler had to relegate to the district league for the first time, but managed to get promoted again via relegation. As a climber, the team immediately took third place and, after the TB Uphusen waived, reached the promotion relegation to the Oberliga Niedersachsen. There the Celler first prevailed 3-1 against SV Bavenstedt and then 1-0 against FT Braunschweig and made the march perfect. In the league season 2012/13 , however, the team did not get beyond 15th place and would have actually been relegated. Since TuS Heeslingen 's upper league license was withdrawn and SV Holthausen / Biene and SC Langenhagen withdrew voluntarily, the Cellers stayed in the class. However, the descent was only postponed. After a completely messed up 2013/14 season , the Celler rose back to the national league as the knocked-down bottom of the table.

Present (since 2014)

In spring 2015, the board of directors negotiated a merger with MTV Eintracht Celle . However, the talks failed. In terms of sport, they only just managed to stay in the league. A year later, the Celler were relegated to the district league. On the last day of the match, the team, who had already been relegated, lost 0:12 against the champions Blau-Weiß Bornreihe . In the summer of 2018, he was relegated to the Celle district league. Two years later, only the descent, which was suspended due to the COVID-19 pandemic , prevented the fall into the 1st district class.

Celle in the cup

Celle took part in the DFB Cup three times , but rarely got past the first round. The TuS took part for the first time in the 1980/81 season and met the second division club SG Union Solingen in the first round . After the game remained goalless after extra time , it came to the replay, which Solingen won 5-0. A year later , the Celler met in round one on the Bayern division ESV Ingolstadt-Ringsee and won 4-2. In the second round, the end followed after a 1: 5 defeat at the second division club Freiburg FC .

The last appearance in the DFB-Pokal dates from the 1997/98 season , when TuS was eliminated in the first round after a 2-0 defeat by Bundesliga club TSV 1860 Munich . At the regional level, the Celler won the Lower Saxony Cup in 1981. In addition, the team won the Lüneburg District Cup in 1980, 1981 and 1989.

Stadion

Main article: Günther Volker Stadium

TuS Celle FC plays its home games in the Günther Volker Stadium. The stadium is located in the west of the city on Nienburger Strasse ( Bundesstrasse 214 ). The stadium opened in 1928 and can seat 11,000 spectators. For safety reasons and mainly because of structural defects, no more than 4,000 spectators are currently allowed into the stadium. It is a pure football stadium with no surrounding tartan track .

On January 17, 1996, a friendly match against FC Bayern Munich had the highest number of spectators with 15,000. In 2005 the final of the German A youth championship was held in Celle . A year later, the Angola national team used the stadium for training during the 2006 World Cup .

Fans

TuS Celle FC has always had a small crowd behind it. Currently (as of 2009) the number of spectators in the Günther Volker Stadium is between 200 and 300 spectators. In the 1970/71 regional league season, the highest average attendance in the club's history was achieved with 6,430 spectators. The club twice reached 11,000 spectators at championship games. So many people saw the home game against VfB Lübeck on May 24, 1969. The home game against Hannover 96 on October 25, 1996 also took place in front of 11,000 spectators .

In April 2011, the away game of TuS Celle FC at Germania Walsrode made headlines in the north German regional media after the Celle fans there clashed with the security service of the Bodyguard Security company . This security service is said to be close to the rocker group Hells Angels .

In December 2016, criminal fans used pyrotechnics during the game against TSV Elstorf to interrupt and abandon the game as well as deploying almost 30 police officers from the Harburg district and Buxtehude . The game was abandoned under pressure from the police, so a replay had to take place. In advance, crosses were set up in and around the village of Elstorf with the date of the game, which heated up the minds in advance.
