Westercelle is a district of the district town of Celle in Lower Saxony , about 3 km south of the city center on the river Fuhse .

history

Christ Church

The place got its name from the western location of the settlement to the original place Celles, now Altencelle . The first dwellings were built on the banks of the Fuhse . Westercelle is an old settlement area. The first Stone Age settlement traces in the form of several thousand stone tools on the Schinderkuhle site have been known since the beginning of the 20th century. There are graves from the Bronze Age on the road to the Bennebostel district. The first documentary mention can be found in an imperial charter from Heinrich II. From the year 1013. Westercelle developed into a purely agricultural, relatively large village with farms on both sides of the road leading from Celle south to Hanover , from which later the Bundesstraße 3 was. Individual farms still exist.

A large-scale fire raged in Westercelle in 1852. On the night of July 26th to 27th, 1852, a fire broke out and spread at high speed over the whole town. In a few hours, the houses, outbuildings and utility rooms at 9 Vollhöfner, 4 Halbhöfner, 2 Kötner and 2 dismantling sites were completely destroyed, as was the schoolhouse. A total of 28 residential buildings and 30 farm buildings fell victim to the flames. 40 families with 151 people had become homeless. Not only was a lot of cattle burned, but the entire first hay harvest of the year and a large part of the rye harvest were destroyed. However, a family also perished in the flames, namely the farm owner Friedrich Krüger together with his wife and two daughters, as an iron grave cross in the Westerceller cemetery reveals. Only the last member of the family, an eleven-year-old boy, remains intact, reports the daily newspaper of the city of Bamberg. In the following months, the farms were mostly rebuilt further away, but with large gaps between them.

With effect from 1 January 1973 the church was closed and mostly in the town of Celle incorporated . The areas south of the Fuhse Canal were added to the municipality of Adelheidsdorf and thus to the joint municipality of Wathlingen .
