Hehlentor is a district of the city of Celle in Lower Saxony , which is north of the city center and takes its name from the former city gate of the city fortifications of Celle .

history

The Hehlentor of the city fortifications of Celle seen from the Harburger Berg. Merian , 1654.

An Aller bridge, which led from the Hehlentor area over the Aller to Celle, was first mentioned in 1325. Streets from Bremen and Lüneburg met here. The former Marienkapelle, which no longer exists today, was built in 1438. After the Reformation was introduced under Duke Ernst the Confessor in 1527, it became the cemetery chapel of the town parish . In 1540 this area is called "in front of the Helen dhore". The name of the Hehlentor comes from the villages of Groß Hehlen and Klein Hehlen , which were only a few kilometers from the city. The first houses were built in the 17th century - craftsmen and restaurants soon followed. A political municipality was formed in 1849, but in 1869 the Hehlentorviertel was incorporated into Celle.

In preparation for the start of color television based on the PAL system in West Germany in August 1967, Telefunken built a new factory for the manufacture of color television receivers from 1964 , which began operations in May 1966. In the 1970s, what was then the largest employer in the city of Celle employed up to 2,800 people. The Telefunken television equipment factory belonged to the French Thomson-Brandt group from 1984 and was closed in 1997. Today there is a shopping center with a hardware store on the former factory premises on Telefunkenstrasse.
