history

On Föscherberg in the district of castle are burial mounds from the Bronze Age (ca. 2000-750 v. Chr.), That indicate human habitation.

The current place name Altencelle indicates that the original town of Celle (town charter since 1249), the "old Celle", was here. The place is first mentioned in 986 as "Kellu" ( settlement on the river ). Here was at this time a castle of brunonids which, like the ring wall of the castle is in the district of castle today only archaeologically detectable.

The castle in Altencelle burned down before 1290. Professor Ernst Sprockhoff , Kiel, directed the excavation work there in 1938/39 and 1947. In his report it says: “It is obviously this castle complex that was burned by the great fire at the end of the 13th century. The traces of the fire were clearly visible everywhere, and melted bronze was also found in the rubble of the tower. "

Duke Otto der Strenge gave up Altencelle in 1292 and founded the "new" Celle about 3 km northwest of an already existing castle.

Executions were carried out on the Galgenberg in Altenceller Feld until 1856. City chronicler Clemens Cassel (1850–1925) states in one of his early works: “In the immediate vicinity of the Gottesackers zu St. Georg [Blumlage] was the 'Judgment Hill', which was demolished in 1652 and on which the 'poor sinners were judged by the sword'. Then the high court across the road was moved to Altenceller Feld. This hill ('Galgenberg') is also removed later. "

On January 1, 1973 Altencelle was incorporated into the district town of Celle.
