Scheuen is a district of the city of Celle in Lower Saxony , north of the city center.

history

Scheuen was first mentioned in a document in 1290 and belonged to the parish of Groß Hehlen .

From 1870 the area northeast of Scheuen (Reiherberg and Arloh) was used as a shooting range for the Celle garrison . During the First World War there was an airfield of the Imperial Navy at Scheuen , as well as the cell camp for several thousand, including Italian prisoners of war , including Carlo Emilio Gadda and Bonaventura Tecchi .

In 1938, the establishment of an ammunition factory with 200 buildings began here .

After the Second World War , the bunkers and remaining ordnance were blown up. The British armed forces used the site and buildings that were still usable as a depot. The area was handed over to the German Armed Forces in 1956 , which began building the Freiherr von Fritsch barracks on part of the site, named after General Freiherr von Fritsch (1880–1939). Units of the Panzer Brigade 33 were located here , most recently the Panzer Lehrbataillon 334 . The barracks were closed in 2006.

On January 1, 1973, Scheuen was incorporated into Celle.

politics

Scheuen has a joint local council with the districts of Groß Hehlen and Hustedt with nine members (4 CDU , 3 SPD , 1 GREEN , 1 independent ).

The local mayor is Axel Fuchs (CDU).

Economy and Infrastructure

The connected training area is still used by the army. A former on-site shooting range was converted into a modern shooting range in 2007 by the Celle hunters' association and a private hunting school.

The "Center of the Eziden in Lower Saxony" ( Yazidis ) has been located in the former soldiers' home since 2008 . The construction of a new location for the Lower Saxony Academy for Fire and Disaster Protection begins on the barracks site in 2012 .

The former airfield, today airfield Celle-Arloh , is operated by an air sports club.

Scheuen is on the Celle – Soltau railway line and earlier on the line to Garßen .
