The tank training battalion 334 "CELLE" was a tank training battalion of the army of the German armed forces, which was stationed together with the 3rd company of the repair battalion 3 in the Freiherr von Fritsch barracks in Celle - Scheuen .

prehistory

The first predecessor unit of Panzerlehrbataillon 34 was set up on July 1, 1957 as Panzerjägerbataillon 1 in the Clausewitz barracks in Nienburg - Langendamm . On April 1, 1959, Panzerjäger Battalion 1 was reclassified, subordinated to Panzer Brigade 3 and renamed Panzer Battalion 334 .

Following this reclassification, the battalion was battle tanks of the type M 48 equipped A2 which the types M 41 and M 47 peeled off. The battalion saw the next upgrade of its main weapon system in May 1966 with the introduction of the Leopard 1 .

On April 1, 1969, the 334 tank battalion was greeted in a parade in Celle and moved into the newly built Freiherr-von-Fritsch barracks.

As part of Army Structure IV , Panzerbataillon 334 was renamed Panzerbataillon 34 on October 1, 1981 . From October 1982 to July 1983, Panzerbataillon 34 was converted to the Leopard 2 battle tank .

History of the Panzer Lehr Battalion 334

With the takeover of Army Structure V , tank battalion 334 was renamed to Panzerlehrbataillon 334 on October 1, 1992 and subordinated to Panzerlehrbrigade 9 in Munster on March 29, 1993 , which in turn is subordinate to the 1st Panzer Division . Due to the decommissioning of the Panzer Brigade 33 "CELLE" on September 30, 1993, the Panzer Lehrbataillon 334 took over the tradition of the Panzer Brigade 33 "CELLE", the Panzer Battalion 331 , the Panzer Battalion 333 and the Field Replacement Battalion 115 .

Since January 31, 1994, the tank training battalion 334 was nicknamed "CELLE" and has thus taken over the maintenance of tradition for the disbanded tank brigade 33 "CELLE". On June 21, 1997, the tank training battalion 334 "CELLE" celebrated its 40th anniversary on July 1, 1997 in the spirit of its predecessor associations and on an open day .

Aid and foreign missions

In addition to numerous aid missions, for example in the fire in the Lüneburg Heath in 1975 (still as Panzerbataillon 34), in the ICE accident in Eschede in 1998 or in the Elbe flood in 2002 , the battalion took part in a foreign deployment of the Bundeswehr in Kosovo in 2004/2005 .

resolution

In December 2005, the tank training battalion 334 was officially decommissioned. For the final dissolution of the association, the remaining leader of the remaining forces of the battalion, Major Mario Ohrmann, handed over the symbolic key of the Freiherr von Fritsch barracks to the deputy head of the Hanover site administration , Nicole Burbach , on June 30, 2006 . Burbach presented the key to the mayor of Celle, Martin Biermann. The barracks key of the Freiherr von Fritsch barracks is kept in the Celle Garrison Museum . A member of the museum's board of directors, Lieutenant Captain of the Reserve Wolf, took over the key from the Lord Mayor. For the barracks various future uses were found: The connected training area is still used by the army. A former on-site shooting range was converted into a modern shooting range in 2007 by the Celle hunters' association and a private hunting school. The "Center of the Eziden in Lower Saxony" ( Yazidis ) has been located in the former soldiers' home since 2008 . The construction of the Lower Saxony Academy for Fire and Disaster Protection Celle ( State Fire Brigade School) began on the barracks site in 2012 .
