Garßen is a town in Lower Saxony in the southern Lüneburg Heath and has been part of Celle since 1973 . It is located on the northeastern edge of the urban area.
history
The place name developed from the name Gersnethe (1248). Historically Garßen belonged to the parish of Groß Hehlen . On January 1, 1973 Garßen lost its independence and was incorporated into the city of Celle.
The place is separated into an old and a new part by the federal road 191 leading from Celle to Eschede and Uelzen . While the new district consists mainly of new residential buildings, the old district still has three farms and lots of old buildings.
Historical development of the population
In 1821 Garßen had only 215 inhabitants (including 21 from the Hornshof district and 7 from the town hall building belonging to Garßen) in 26 houses (2 horn court buildings, 1 town town building). For 1848 there are 296 inhabitants, 1900 357, 1910 457, 1919 554 and 1925 565 inhabitants in 100 houses. For 1913 85 livestock households are given in Garßen with 57 horses, 334 cattle, 34 sheep, 719 pigs, 25 goats and 3072 fruit trees, for 1919 20 rabbits and for 1921 200 beehives are given.

Buildings, culture and sights
- The center of the old part of the village is the Markuskirche, built around the middle of the 14th century.
- In 1822 the mathematician Carl Friedrich Gauß found, with some difficulties, a suitable measuring point in Garßen for the land survey he carried out in what was then the Kingdom of Hanover . Today an information board in the village reminds of this measuring point.

Economy and Infrastructure
Next to the church are the primary school and the Erich Kästner special needs school. In addition, there is a DRK kindergarten and a large consumer market in Garßen, as well as several small craft businesses.
Garßen is known nationwide through the sports club SV Garßen Celle, which played under the short name SVG Celle since 1998 in the 2nd women's handball league (north) and was promoted to the first women's handball league again in 2011.
Furthermore, there has been a golf course on the eastern edge of the village on the road to Lachendorf for several years .
