The Verden historical sources already mention Eschede in a document from 1227. The content is summarized as follows:

Kunigunde, widow of Count Bernhard von Wölpe, who is accepted into the brotherhood of the Verden Church with her husband and son Konrad, sells the superior property to the Verden Cathedral Chapter with the consent of Bishop Iso, as guardian of his brother's son and their son, Count Konrad of half the tithe in Eschede (Kirchsp. in d. A.-V. Beedenbostel), which Konrad from the Honhofe of the Verden Church sold and resigned to her and her son, and provides the cathedral chapter with guarantees that her son as soon as he becomes majorenn to confirm this sale. Neustadt, March 30, 1227. In nomine domini amen.

In February 1900 the Eschede volunteer fire brigade was founded as the gymnast fire department of the gymnastics club “Unity”.

Two serious accidents or catastrophes occurred in Eschede in the 20th century:

  • In the summer of 1975 there was a fire in the Lüneburg Heath in the vicinity of Eschede , a series of large-scale forest and heather fires .
  • On June 3, 1998, the ICE  884 “Wilhelm Conrad Röntgen” derailed on the Hanover – Hamburg line in the immediate vicinity of the Eschede train station and caused the bridge on Rebberlaher Strasse to collapse. When railway accident of Eschede 101 people were killed. The trigger for the disaster was a torn off wheel tire and a subsequent chain of unfortunate events. The reason for the tire tear was most likely insufficient maintenance of the ICE wheels.

Incorporations

On January 1, 1973, the communities of Dalle, Rebberlah, Starkshorn and Weyhausen were incorporated. On March 1, 1973, parts of the neighboring municipality of Unterlüß with fewer than 50 inhabitants at that time were added. On January 1, 2014, the joint municipality of Eschede and its member municipalities were dissolved and a single municipality of Eschede was created.

Culture and sights

The mobile library of the district of Celle has its seat in Eschede and controls every fortnightly the communities and districts of the district without a community library as a lending library .

A cultural association, the outskirts of Eschede , organizes lectures, music evenings and exhibitions in the old mill ("Musenmöhl").

Buildings

  • In 1490 a church was first mentioned in Eschede. Today's Evangelical Lutheran " St. John's Church " was completed and consecrated in 1713. In 1968 the church was renovated and the entire interior was redesigned. When the freestanding wooden bell tower was renovated in 1978, it burned out completely. The bells fell and were destroyed. They are now set up on the church wall and can be seen. In 1979 the wooden bell tower was rebuilt.
  • The Catholic church " St. Theresia of the Child Jesus " built in 1953 on Grünackerstraße was profaned in 2017 .
  • The flea mill is located in the center of Eschede. The Erdholländer windmill with a massive brick tower was built in 1874.

Nature and wildlife

The Aschau flowing in from Unterlüß flows through Eschede , whose headwaters lie in the “Loher Teichen” and which then forms the large “Aschautiche” pond area . The ponds of the Samtgemeinde have a total area of 348 hectares. The pond areas have been part of a water protection area since 1982 . In 1987 they were also designated as a bird sanctuary . The area has been an EU bird sanctuary since 2003 and has been assigned to FFH area 86 "Lachte-Lutter-Aschau" as part of the EU nature conservation project Natura2000 since 2005 .

Since Eschede lies on the edge of a very large forest area, the rutting of the red deer in Starkshorn near Eschede is an autumnal, noisy attraction that attracts spectators with license plates from all over Lower Saxony. Almost 200 hinds gather there on the meadows every year. Wooded connections not only to the north via Unterlüß , but also to the military training areas Munster and Bergen or via Fuhrberg to the vicinity of Burgwedel (see Lüßwald ), also ensure the spread of the wolf, which is already multiplying there in large numbers . In February 2014, a photo trap was used to detect two adult wolves in the Eschede area, which have now formed their own pack .

In addition to the Aschau ponds and the Loher ponds, there are even larger pond areas on the Hanover – Hamburg railway line , which were created around 1845 when the sand was excavated for the embankment of this route. There are also many moors and swamps around Eschede and other ponds, which are often hidden in the surrounding forests.

economy

Original Eschede dairy, Bahnhofstrasse

In 1907, Holsteiner Diedrich Bornholdt founded a dairy on Bahnhofstrasse . In 1923 August Strauss GmbH & Co. KG emerged. Initially, due to the initially low milk supply, it only traded raw milk. By 1949 the number of milk producers rose continuously to 170 farms. The processing techniques changed constantly. In 1973 the milk supply was switched from cans to tank trucks. In 1986 August Strauss's son took over the business, which was then run under the company Molkerei Eschede Günter Strauss GmbH, Gartenstrasse 11. On December 31, 2018, the dairy, which was last supplied by 46 farms , was closed and production stopped.
