The Samtgemeinde Eschede was a community association in the district of Celle in Lower Saxony . It was located in one of the most sparsely populated areas in West Germany. Two thirds of their area was forest.
geography
Joint community structure
The combined community consisted of the four member communities Eschede , Habighorst , Höfer and Scharnhorst .
On January 1, 2014, the joint municipality of Eschede and its member municipalities were dissolved and a single municipality of Eschede was created.
history
In 1967 the integrated municipality of Eschede was created. It was the first in the district of Celle and initially consisted of Eschede and Dalle and Weyhausen . In its current form, the integrated community finally came into being in 1973 as part of the completion of the Lower Saxony regional reform . However, especially in the mining community of Höfer, there was strong resistance to the reorganization.
In the summer of 1975, the large-scale forest and heather fires in the Samtgemeinde attracted nationwide attention ( see also : Fire in the Lüneburg Heath ).
The municipality made the headlines again when the ICE accident in Eschede occurred on June 3, 1998 , in which 101 people were killed. The ICE " Wilhelm Conrad Röntgen " derailed and crashed into a bridge. The trigger for the disaster was a cracked tire . In this situation, however, the population of Eschede also became known for their overwhelming spontaneous willingness to help in the face of the misfortune.
In 2008 it became known that within the joint community, in the abandoned shafts of the salt mine Mariaglück von Höfer , lye from the Asse nuclear waste plant had been filled with radioactive tritium for years .
