Headwaters

The ash pond near Eschede

The Aschau rises as Drellebach in a 5 kilometer long dry valley that is sunk into the southern roofing of the forest-covered Lüß plateau in the southern heath . After 1.8 kilometers the brook feeds the Loher ponds, which were artificially created in the 1890s. From the confluence of the almost parallel Daller Bach coming from the left, the Bach is called Aschau .

Together with the Aschau ponds, which were created from 1903, a coherent area of around 50 artificially created fish ponds has been created in which extensive fish farming of trout , carp , tench , pike , golden orfe , as well as signal and noble crabs is carried out. Here live as habitat fish gudgeon , roach , stickleback , bitterlings and pond mussels . In addition to the gray heron , the gray goose and the Canada goose, rare birds such as black stork , great egret , red-necked grebe , bittern and kingfisher can be observed on the waterfront . The crane breeds here and, since 2004, the osprey too . The sea eagle can be seen from time to time.

The pond areas have been part of a water protection area since 1982 . In 1987 they were also designated as a bird sanctuary . The area has been an EU bird sanctuary since 2003 and has been assigned to the FFH area 86 Lachte-Lutter-Aschau as part of the EU nature conservation project Natura2000 since 2005 .

The Aschau now enters the gently undulating, arable land moraine landscape around Eschede . It crosses under the B 191 , takes the Postmoorgraben from the left and then flows through extensively managed meadows and natural forest to Eschede. In Habighorst the Quarmbach joins from the right, which rises in the Rahmoor and forms a large swamp and pond area shortly before it flows into the Aschau. Immediately north of this area is the Hoppenriethe nature reserve . Already in the 15th century Quarmbach was dammed to the existing time here Quarmühle to operate. Some of the ponds are likely to be that old. The buildings fell into disrepair in the 1980s and later burned down. In the further course the Aschau flows past the disused potash mine Mariaglück through Höfer . In a southerly direction it flows through Beedenbostel and then flows into the Lachte .
