Life

Clemens Cassel was born in Salzgitter. His father was a master potter and his mother came from a family of farm owners from Beuchte . His parents died very early and so Cassel grew up with a childless aunt. Cassel became a teacher and took positions as a private tutor in the Nordheide and Eckernförde . In 1878 he passed his secondary school teacher exam at his school in Kronenberg near Elberfeld. Two years earlier, he and two colleagues had already written the "Chronicle of the mayor's office in Kronenberg". In 1880 Cassel took over a teaching position at the middle school in Celle . This position - temporarily in connection with the office of the orphanage father - carried out Cassel until he retired early in 1910 due to his progressive hearing loss. From then on, Cassel dedicated his retirement to his home history and chronicle. Since 1894 he owned a house on Braunhirschstrasse. He had four children from two marriages.

On the floor of the old town hall of Celle, Cassel devoted himself to the unsorted and accumulated archives of the city of Celle and, with the express permission of Mayor Denicke, wrote his chronicle on the history of the city of Celle. In his work, Cassel combined scientific methodology with his excellent ability to tell vividly. Many scholarly critics paid tribute to his works, as Cassel knew how to make up for his academic deficits with his natural talent and understanding of bygone eras. It is thanks to his motivation and dedication that the history of Celle was enriched by an extensive chronicle after the First World War.

When he presented the draft version of his city chronicle in 1924, the city administration initially wanted to publish it in several individual sections. Cassel, who had always advocated a coherent view of history, contradicted this. At the age of 75, just three months after his birthday, Cassel died after a brief illness. His city chronicle was published on his birthday at the end of February / March 1930.

Although Clemens Cassel saw himself in the context of the German classics and developed conservative external effects, his works are characterized by a special gift of objectivity.

Services

Clemens Cassel devoted himself like no other to coming to terms with the history of Celle. He owes a lot of today's knowledge about the cityscape.
