The Günther-Volker-Stadion is a soccer stadium in the Lower Saxon city of Celle and home of the soccer club TuS Celle FC . The stadium currently only has a capacity of 4,000 spectators.
history
The square and the adjoining clubhouse were built between 1923 and 1928 by the members of the Free Gymnastics Association from 1899 . The footballers of TuS Celle FC have been at home there since 1945 . After thousands of fans had to stand right on the edge of the field in the first few years, an uncovered grandstand was built in 1951 that offered space for 300 spectators. All in all, the sports field could hold up to 10,000 spectators at that time. Of the running track that had moved the field, initially only a 100 m track with a jump recess remained, which, however, later had to give way.
In April 1963 the city of Celle took over the administration of the stadium, after which the changing rooms were renovated. In the summer of 1968 an additional small grandstand was built next to the sports center. When promotion to the 2nd Bundesliga was within reach in Celle , TuS chairman Günther Volker , after whom the stadium was later to be named , demanded that the city undertake a comprehensive expansion. At that time, the grandstand offered space for 2,160 spectators. After long discussions in boards and committees, however, the plans were shelved for the time being after relegation to fourth class.
After reaching the promotion round to the Oberliga Nord in 1980, the city finally took pity, so that in September 1981 250,000 DM was invested in an eight-tier covered grandstand with 418 seats and adjoining standing room, which could accommodate a further 1,120 people. In December 1989 a new changing building was built. After the club's long-term successes, the city built a large grandstand for 4,000 spectators on the east side of the square and another standing grandstand behind the gate in cooperation with the district. The playing field was completely surrounded by a grandstand and now offered space for 11,000 spectators. A total of DM 2.5 million was invested in the renovation work. In addition, a car dealer sponsored a billboard that initially had to be operated manually, but was replaced by an electronic display in 1996. In November 1992 the first floodlit match was held in the Günther Volker Stadium .
For a few years now, the capacity has been 4,000. This justifies the city of Celle u. a. with structural defects and changed safety regulations, etc. a. there are no breakwaters.
Special games
The stadium's attendance record was set on January 17, 1996 in a friendly against FC Bayern Munich . An additional mobile grandstand was specially built for the game so that almost 15,000 spectators could take part. The point game record of 11,000 spectators, which was set up on May 24, 1969 in the game against VfB Lübeck , was set on October 25, 1996 in the first point game against Hannover 96 in almost 50 years. In July 2001, 12,000 spectators were present at another guest appearance by the German record champions.
During the 2006 World Cup , the Angolan national football team moved into Celle. In addition to the training units in the Günther Volker Stadium , a training game between Angola and a selection of football players from Celle took place on May 25, 2006, most of which consisted of TuS players. The game ended 5-3 for Angola in front of 8,200 spectators.
Other special games were the final of the German A youth championship between VfB Stuttgart and VfL Bochum on June 25, 2005 and the TuS local derby against city rivals MTV Eintracht Celle on September 26, 2003. The first derby in 56 years attracted 2800 spectators into the stadium, with which a national league record could be set. In addition, the Günther Volker Stadium provided the backdrop for numerous international junior matches for the German selection teams.
