Günther Volker

Günther Volker (born January 12, 1924 in Celle ; † March 4, 1999 there ) was a German sports official .

Life

Volker was a dentist in Celle and from 1983 to 1996 President of the State Sports Association of Lower Saxony , having previously been Deputy Chairman and Chairman of the District Sports Association from 1975 to 1983.

He made a special contribution to the integration of athletes with disabilities, so that the State Sports Association has been awarding the Günther Volker Prize since 2002 based on the great importance that Volker attached to the rehabilitative and integrative power of sport. Volker has been a member of the board of the Lower Saxony Institute for Sports History since it was founded, as he saw the documentation and processing of the traditions of sport as an important unique selling point of the sports clubs and associations, which have an integrative effect.

In 1996, Volker was posthumously awarded the Great Cross of Merit of the Lower Saxony Order of Merit. The city of Celle honored his memory by naming the sports stadium Günther-Volker-Stadion .
