The Lower Saxony Institute for Sports History ( NISH ) is a documentation center in Hanover for researching and registering the development of sports in Lower Saxony and the neighboring northern German areas. The NISH was the first institution of its kind in Germany and is considered exemplary in the field of regional sports research. Founding president was Wilhelm Henze , deputy chairman Günther Volker , managing director Hans Fritsch (athlete) , chairman of the scientific advisory board Arnd Krüger . The current chairman (since 2018) of the association is K. Wilhelm Köster , the two vice chairmen are Detlef Kuhlmann and Arnd Krüger; The managing director is Bernd Wedemeyer-Kolwe , honorary member of the board of directors Friedrich Mevert . The chairman of the Scientific Advisory Board is Christian Becker , Deputy Swantje Scharenberg , members u. a. the sports scientists Michael Krüger , Gertrud Pfister and the archivist Cornelia Regin .

The "Lower Saxon gymnastics father" Franz Wilhelm Metz is the leading figure of the NISH.

The NISH was founded in 1981 under the patronage of Lower Saxony's Prime Minister Ernst Albrecht , initially as the Lower Saxony Institute for Sports History Hoya e. V. , where the institute was based until 2010. In 1984, the nationwide inventory of scientific sources began, but had to be interrupted for financial reasons. Since its inception, the NISH has organized numerous exhibitions on Lower Saxony's sports history and conferences on sports history, including a. the 6th annual congress of the European Committee for Sports History (CESH) 2001 in Göttingen. The NISH is institutionally funded by the Lower Saxony State Sports Association.

At the end of 2010, the NISH moved to Hanover in the building complex of the Lower Saxony State Sports Association .

The institute is the documentation center for sports in Lower Saxony and has numerous legacies of sport-scientific importance and maintains the archives of the Lower Saxony State Sports Association, which in future will be made accessible through a database. Outstanding holdings of personal estates are the collection of the former wrestling official Gerhard Schäfer on the history of strength sports and wrestling from 1890 to 1980 as well as an extensive collection on the history of chess by chess player and official Peter Werner (1936–1999) from Bockenem. In the library collection, among others, which is International Naturist library , the largest collection of nudism , which previously in Kassel was located, as well as a collection on the history of disabled sports . The reference library comprises around 20,000 volumes, including 3,600 commemorative publications and chronicles of clubs and associations. The collections also include around 20,000 image files.

The NISH publishes its own series of publications by Lit Verlag as well as yearbooks , exhibition catalogs and individual publications. Every two years it organizes the competition “We are looking for the best anniversary publication” in order to honor and support the creation of good quality club anniversary publications as well as the Bernhard Zimmermann competition to honor the best scientific work on the history of sports in Northern Germany. In addition, the NISH has opened the gallery of honor for athletes from Lower Saxony, whose long-term supervisor was a founding member of the NISH Kurt Hoffmeister . The NISH awards the Bernhard Zimmermann Medal for special services to sports history .

At the federal level, the NISH initiated the German Association of Sports Museums, Sports Archives and Sports Collections eV (DAGS), which was founded in 2003.
