K. Wilhelm Koester

Karl Wilhelm Köster (born November 25, 1934 in Sulingen ) is a former German athletics official and sports historian .

Career as a functionary

Wilhelm Köster is a trained master baker . From 1958 he was engaged in various functions at TuS Sulingen , later at district, district and state level. In 1970 Köster took over a full-time job at the German Athletics Association (DLV). Until 1981 he was head of the department for popular sports and until 1987 for senior senior sports as well. From 1970 to 1999 responsible for competitions and competition organization including rules. In 1971 Köster initiated the DLV senior best fights (later championships) and in 1975 the DLV running badge. In 1978 he was a founding member and technical manager of the European Seniors' Association for Athletics (EVAA) and therefore responsible (co) organizer of 13 European Senior Championships as well as the Secretary General of the 3rd Senior World Championships in 1979 in Hanover with over 3000 participants. From 1979 to 2012 he was a member of various committees of the World Association of Veteran Athletes (WAVA), later World Masters Athletics (WMA), including a five-year council member. In addition to being responsible for national and international championships in the DLV association area, he also worked at the Military World Championships (CISM) in Warendorf in 1987 and at the IPC World Championships for people with disabilities in Berlin in 1994. 2000 in the founding committee of the European Masters Sport Association (EMSA) and from 2002 to 2008 its technical director. Initiator and 20 years spokesman for an international German-speaking regular commission. From 2000 to 2012 he was senior manager in the Lower Saxony Athletics Association (NLV), since 2002 member of the Scientific Advisory Board of the Lower Saxony Institute for Sports History (NISH), since 2010 Deputy Chairman and since 2018 Chairman of the institute. Since 2002 he has also been a member of the board of the Diepholz district sports association. He himself wrote publications on the history of athletics, local sports and the history of Sulingen.

Back in his hometown, he was an arbitrator for the city of Sulingen from 2000 to 2009.
