The State of Hesse's letter of honor has been awarded by the Hessian Prime Minister since 1973 for many years of voluntary work in local self-government or for participation in organizations with cultural or social goals.

history

The letter of honor of the State of Hesse was donated in 1973 by a decree of the Hessian Prime Minister Albert Osswald . In Rhineland-Palatinate , a similar award was created a year later with the badge of honor of the State of Rhineland-Palatinate .

In exceptional cases, especially if the activity was only started at an advanced age or in the case of exceptionally high performance, the letter of honor can also be awarded without this requirement.

Badge of Honor, 1st model (1973 to 1981)

In addition to the letter of honor, a 15 mm cross-shaped silver oxide pin of honor is awarded, which shows the Hessian lion on the front . This version, with a clear design reference to the Hessian Order of Merit , has existed since 2003 and is the third version.

The first version of the badge of honor consisted of a silver octagon with a red and silver striped Hessian lion and the red lettering Hessen from 1973 to 1981 . The second version from 1981 to 2003 was circular, made entirely of silver and provided with the coat of arms of Hesse and the inscription Hesse .

The decree on the foundation of the letters of honor does not contain any regulation on the design of a strap buckle . According to the suit regulations of the Bundeswehr , the miniature of the badge of honor would have to be attached to a black background. However, there is also a version with a red and white band.

Right of proposal

In principle, every citizen can apply for the award for someone else. Applications for the award of the letter of honor are usually directed to the district administrator via the municipal board or the magistrate or to the mayor in urban districts. The latter decide on the award and sign the certificate together with the Prime Minister. He can also award the letter of honor on his own responsibility.
