The Niederösterreichische Berg- und Naturwacht is a non-profit association of public state cultural guard bodies appointed and sworn in accordance with state law, which serves to support the interests of nature and environmental protection to be safeguarded by the state. It is one of the nine mountain and nature watchdogs in Austria , a member of the working group of mountain and nature watchdogs Austria (ABNÖ) and is based in St. Pölten .

history

In 1963, Franz Hauer founded the Lower Austrian Nature Guard in Gloggnitz with the local group "Rax-Schneeberg" , a working group of the Nature Conservation Union. Within two years the group grew from 12 to 19 members, in other local groups there were 80 comrades. In 1975 the Naturschutzbund working group became an independent association.

The nature and mountain rescue service founded in 1964 only lasted for a short time.

In 1970 the Lower Austrian Mountain Rescue Service was established, which was already divided into district groups. The groups were registered as a separate association with the responsible district administration. In 1970 the Lower Austrian Mountain Rescue Service already had 300 members.

In 1972 the umbrella organization of the Lower Austrian Mountain and Nature Guard was founded, which for inexplicable reasons was only registered by the association authorities in 1979. In the autumn of 1981, the second regional leaders from the Lower Austrian Nature Guard Willy Schremser and from the Lower Austrian Mountain Rescue Service Friedrich Jeges (* 1931 † 2017) agreed to merge the two clubs.

On January 23, 1982, general assemblies of the Lower Austrian Nature Guard and Lower Austrian Mountain Rescue associations were held in Neulengbach for the purpose of dissolving them. Immediately afterwards, the founding assembly of the Lower Austrian Mountain and Nature Guard took place.
