Mountain and nature guards in Austria
The mountain and nature guards in Austria provide information about nature conservation , monitor the laws for the protection of nature and the environment, support the authorities in maintaining the natural and cultural landscape and actively help with its maintenance. Depending on the federal state, these are public corporations , associations or parts of the state governments, the exact tasks and powers of which differ in some cases. The employees are subordinate to the district or directly to the federal states, work on an honorary or full-time basis and are sworn as public guard organs.
In contrast to the German mountain rescue service , alpine rescue is organized in the Austrian mountain rescue service . The support of the authorities is called the nature conservation service in Germany and there are sometimes nature conservation guards .
organization
The mountain and nature watch are set up federally by the federal states. The nature conservation laws of all federal states provide for voluntary nature conservation watch bodies to support the authorities in carrying out their tasks. Legally, the organizations in some federal states are organized as a corporation under public law (Carinthia, Styria, Tyrol), in others as associations (Vienna, Lower Austria and Vorarlberg), in Burgenland they are full-time bodies with voluntary supporters and an association that takes on some tasks in Salzburg and probably Upper Austria they are directly subordinate to the provincial government. In mountainous federal states, the organizations usually bear the name “Bergwacht”, in flatter federal states the name “Naturwacht”, or as a mixture the name “Bergwacht” and “Naturwacht”. The association Arbeitsgemeinschaft der Berg- und Naturwächs Österreichs (ABNÖ), based in Salzburg , acts as the umbrella organization .
The employees are organs of public supervision and, after appropriate training and passed exams, are sworn as public watch organs. They are mostly subordinate to the district administrative authorities , otherwise to the state government. Guards' organs are usually uniformly dressed in the state, but can also perform their duties in civilian clothes. The respective official ID card is carried by the organs with which they legitimize themselves. You have the right to request identification, to confiscate certain items (e.g. bird traps) and, like everyone, to report violations to the authorities. In some federal states they are also allowed to issue organ criminal mandates and, if necessary, arrest lawbreakers caught in the act .
