The nature conservation service is a service for nature conservation issues that is individually regulated by the German federal states. The service is i. d. Usually exercised on a voluntary basis. The aim is to enforce nature conservation issues and to control all actions that contravene local nature conservation law.

Skilled persons who are trained according to country-specific regulations are appointed to the nature conservation service by the nature conservation authorities .

In Austria these tasks are carried out by the mountain and nature guards.

Baden-Württemberg

In Baden-Württemberg there are voluntary nature conservation officers whose tasks are regulated in the State Nature Conservation Act:

§ 48 Nature Conservation Authorities, Paragraph 5: The nature conservation officers are volunteers. The urban and rural districts each appoint one or more nature conservation officers for their area for a period of five years. The order is revocable. The nature conservation officers are entitled to reimbursement of their expenses. You are also entitled to appropriate compensation from the state.

Bavaria

In Bavaria, the lower nature conservation authorities can appoint auxiliaries as nature conservation watch in accordance with Art. 49 BayNatSchG . After completing technical and legal training, they have police powers limited to their specific area . Members of the nature protection watch are usually active on a voluntary basis; in some cases, people are appointed to carry out professional supervision in protected areas anyway.

Free Hanseatic City of Bremen

There has been a nature protection watch in Bremen since 1995 . Its honorary members are appointed by the Senator for the Environment . The members of the nature protection watch are mainly occupied with looking after the nature and landscape protection areas of Bremen and are considered to be the link between the administration and the public. They look after the protected areas in cooperation with the nature conservation associations.

Their tasks include informing visitors about the protected areas, monitoring the protective regulations and carrying out minor repair and maintenance work. In addition, they are the contact person for schools, (nature conservation) associations and authorities and offer natural history tours. The employees of the Bremen nature protection watch wear service clothing (vests) and service badges.

Schleswig-Holstein

According to the state ordinance on the nature conservation service of June 16, 1995, the lower nature conservation authorities can appoint competent persons to the nature conservation service in consultation with the respective nature conservation advisory board. Local nature conservation associations can make suggestions. The order is only made for a certain area within the area of ​​responsibility of the ordering nature conservation authority. The members of the nature conservation service are appointed for a maximum period of five years. Re-appointment is possible. The members of the nature conservation service are members of the nature conservation authority in the field while performing their duties.

Eligibility requirements are therefore the reliability for the performance of the office, knowledge of nature conservation and landscape management , recreation in nature and landscape, applicable legal and administrative regulations as well as the knowledge and skills necessary for the exercise of the activity and the performance of the tasks. In addition, local knowledge is considered useful.

You are bound by instructions from the ordering nature conservation authorities. In addition, they decide on their own activity within the scope of the task description. Insofar as it is necessary to fulfill their tasks, the members of the nature conservation service are entitled in accordance with Section 50 of the State Nature Conservation Act to perform a number of sovereign tasks in their service district (issuing reprimands, securing illegally removed plants, animals or objects, etc.). The volunteer members of the Nature Conservation Service have to take part in a number of training measures during an appointment period.
