Fabian Gerber (born November 28, 1979 in Munich ) is a former German soccer player .

Career as a player

Born in Bavaria and raised in Lower Saxony since 1985 , the son of the former professional soccer player and coach Franz Gerber made his debut for Hannover 96 in the 2nd Bundesliga in the 1998/99 season . In the winter of 1999/2000 Gerber moved to FC St. Pauli , with whom he was promoted to the Bundesliga in 2001 . In the summer of 2001 he joined the Bundesliga rivals SC Freiburg, played eleven Bundesliga games and relegated to the 2nd Bundesliga at the end of the season with the team. In January 2003 he returned to FC St. Pauli and was relegated with this team at the end of the season. Although the midfielder only moved to St. Pauli during the winter break, he was the team's top goalscorer this season; Gerber has scored seven of his eight goals this season in the last nine games. As in his time in Hanover, Gerber's father was a coach at FC St. Pauli.

For the 2003/04 season , Gerber moved to the second division 1. FSV Mainz 05 , with whom he rose to the Bundesliga for the first time in the club's history in 2004. In the first year of the first division in Mainz , Gerber was the team's top scorer with seven goals. In summer 2005 he was heavily courted by several Bundesliga clubs, including Hertha BSC , but extended his contract with Mainz. Gerber prevailed in Mainz and got a regular place. After running behind his form for a long time, he had finally found it again and fought with his team to stay in the Bundesliga , but did not succeed.

In the summer of 2007 he moved to the Greek first division club OFI Crete for two years . For the 2009/10 season Gerber returned to Germany for FC Ingolstadt 04 . In his first season at FCI, he and his team took third place in the third division . In the following second and decisive relegation game against Hansa Rostock , he scored both goals for a 2-0 away win and rose to the 2nd Bundesliga with the Ingolstadt team after the 1-0 first-leg win. There, his contract was not renewed in the summer of 2013, after which he ended his career as a player.

Career as a coach

In January 2016 Gerber became the new trainer at the regional league team BSV Rehden . Half a year later, the club separated from him.

In summer 2017 he became assistant coach of the reserve team of his former club 1. FSV Mainz 05 .

For the 2018/19 season , Gerber became the individual coach of the second division club FC Ingolstadt 04 under head coach Stefan Leitl . He kept the function under the other head coaches Alexander Nouri , Jens Keller and Tomas Oral . FC Ingolstadt 04 was relegated to the 3rd division , whereupon head coach Oral and Gerber left the club.

For the 2019/20 season, Gerber moved to Bundesliga relegated 1. FC Nürnberg and became assistant coach to the new head coach Damir Canadi alongside Erik Orie . After the club separated from Canadi and Orie in November 2019, Gerber remained alongside the new assistant coach Thomas Stickroth in the coaching staff of the new head coach Jens Keller , under whom he had already worked at FC Ingolstadt 04 the previous season.

Others

Gerber suffered serious injuries in a motorcycle accident in August 2002, which forced him to take a break for several months.
