Team 2006

The 2006 team was a perspective team formed by the German Football Association , consisting of football players who were promoted in view of the World Cup in their own country and were intended to complement the German senior national team .

History and impact

After the 2006 World Cup was awarded to Germany, as a result of the poor performance at the 2000 European Football Championship , a selection team was created on October 7, 2001, which offered young players in particular the opportunity to compete in international matches for the senior national team and future tournaments to recommend. The team's first coach was Uli Stielike , who was followed on April 8, 2003 by DFB coach Erich Rutemöller .

The first game took place on September 6, 2002 in Mönchengladbach and ended with a 1: 2 defeat against Turkey's A2 team. Joachim Löw , then assistant to national coach Jürgen Klinsmann , welcomed the opportunity "to invite players who have earned such a nomination through good performances in the Bundesliga and who are in the extended focus of the senior national team." Ultimately Tim Borowski , Arne Friedrich , Mike Hanke and Timo Hildebrand took part in the 2006 World Cup.

After the World Cup, Manuel Friedrich , Alexander Madlung , Clemens Fritz , Stefan Kießling , Simon Rolfes , Robert Enke (who had already participated in the Confederations Cup in 1999 ), Patrick Helmes , Mario Gómez , Christian Gentner , Marcel Schäfer , Jermaine Jones and Roman made it Weidenfeller (only 2013) made the jump to the A-team.
