Stefan Kießling (born January 25, 1984 in Lichtenfels ) is a former German soccer player .

Kießling began his professional career in 2002 with 1. FC Nürnberg in the Bundesliga . After relegation in 2003, he also played a year in the 2nd Bundesliga , where the club managed to get back up as a second division champions. After two more years in the Bundesliga, Kießling moved to Bayer 04 Leverkusen for the 2006/07 season . There Kießling, who was mainly used as a center forward but also as a winger, played for twelve years until the end of his career in 2018, and during his time with the club and among its supporters, he made a name for himself. With 144 goals in 403 games, he is 17th in the list of the most successful goal scorers in the Bundesliga . In addition, with 131 Bundesliga goals he is Bayer 04 Leverkusen's second most successful goalscorer behind Ulf Kirsten (181) and, alongside him, the only player in the club to become the top scorer in the Bundesliga . After ending his professional career in mid-2018, he took up a position in the administration of Bayer 04 Leverkusen in October that year.

In the National Kiessling came six times for use between 2007 and 2010. He took part in the 2010 World Cup and finished third in the tournament with the team.

Club career

Youth and beginnings as a professional (until 2006)

Kießling was born in Lichtenfels in Upper Franconia . His favorite clubs were 1. FC Nürnberg and FC Arsenal . His first club was TSV Eintracht Bamberg , which Kießling's grandfather had co-founded and where his father was active as a goalkeeper. In the club he played from the age of four and went through all youth teams. Initially, Kießling acted as a goalkeeper, but gradually developed into a striker. Because of a growth spurt in 1997, his left leg grew faster than his right, which is why Kießling missed a year of the C-youth. For the 2001/02 season he moved from the U17s of Eintracht Bamberg to the A-youth of 1. FC Nürnberg. With his U19, Kießling was Bayern League champion in his first season and was promoted to the Regionalliga Süd, at that time the highest A-junior division. At the end of the 2002/03 season they finished fifth and qualified for the newly established A-Junior Bundesliga .

For the amateur team of 1. FC Nürnberg Kießling scored 13 goals in 21 games from 2002 to 2005. In 2002 he signed a six-year contract with the first team. He had his first Bundesliga appearance in the 2002/03 relegation season on March 26, 2003 in the 4-0 away defeat against Hamburger SV . He scored his first goal for 1. FC Nürnberg in the 2nd division on March 7, 2004 against SpVgg Greuther Fürth to make it 2-2. This season, as the second division champions, they rose again to the Bundesliga. Kießling scored the winning goal against VfL Osnabrück on the 32nd matchday to make it 4: 3, which meant the direct re-promotion. In the 2005/06 season he made his breakthrough at 1. FC Nürnberg and became a regular player; Kießling scored ten goals in 31 games.

Transfer and first years at Bayer 04 Leverkusen (2006–2009)

Kießling's performances at 1. FC Nürnberg woke u. a. the interest of Arsenal and Bayern Munich , but for the 2006/07 season he moved to Bayer 04 Leverkusen . He received a four-year contract valid until June 30, 2010, which he extended on March 5, 2008 early to 2012. On August 12, 2006, the first day of the 2006/07 season , he made his debut at the BayArena . In the game against Alemannia Aachen, Kießling prepared Simon Rolfes's goal to make it 3-0 and was substituted in the 78th minute. Kießling scored the first competitive goal for his new club on matchday 12 against FC Bayern Munich. On September 28, 2006, he made his debut in the European Cup when he came on in the 89th minute for Andrij Voronin in the 3-1 win in the first round second leg of the UEFA Cup against FC Sion . He played a total of 43 competitive games in the season and scored eight goals.

In the 2007/08 season , Kießling only reached seventh place in the league with his club, in the DFB Cup they were eliminated in the first round and in the UEFA Cup in the quarter-finals, so that they did not qualify for any international competition. Kießling scored 16 goals in 44 competitive games, nine in the league and seven in the UEFA Cup. In the 2008/09 season Bayer Leverkusen finished ninth in the Bundesliga table at the end of the season, and on May 30, 2009 Kießling reached the DFB Cup final 2008/09 , which was lost 1-0 to Werder Bremen . In 40 games, Kießling scored twelve league goals and two goals in the DFB Cup. He was often used as a winger this season , as Patrick Helmes mostly played the role of striker.

Top striker in the Bundesliga (2009-2015)

Before the 2009/10 season he was accepted by fans as a substitute in the 11th century (+10) eleven of 1. FC Nürnberg via an internet vote . Kießling made his sporting breakthrough in Leverkusen this season. After Helmes tore a cruciate ligament before the season , Kießling went back to the forward position. He scored five goals in the first five matchdays. He was also voted August 2009 Footballer of the Month . In the first half of the season Kießling scored twelve goals, including three of the four goals in the game against VfB Stuttgart on matchday 14. That was last achieved by Patrick Helmes on the 5th day of the 2008/09 season . He scored a total of 21 goals in 33 Bundesliga games and was second on the scorers list behind Edin Džeko from Wolfsburg (22 goals). He was also the most efficient goalscorer in the league with 19.5 points and was sixth in the election for Germany's Footballer of the Year 2010 . Despite a few offers from other clubs, Kießling extended his contract with Bayer 04 Leverkusen on March 16, 2010, until June 30, 2015. He made it clear that he wanted to fulfill this contract.

Kießling in action (2012)

In the first round of the 2010/11 DFB Cup , Kießling scored two goals in an 11-1 win against FK Pirmasens . He made his first goal of the season on the 2nd matchday in the game against Borussia Mönchengladbach , when he scored the 3-6 final score. When he fouled Andreas Wolf from Nuremberg on matchday four, he tore a syndesmosis ligament , which is why he was out for almost the entire rest of the first half of the season. Kießling made his comeback on December 16, 2010 in the last group game of the Europa League against Atlético Madrid , when he was substituted on at the beginning of the second half. His comeback in the Bundesliga took place on December 19, 2010 on the 17th matchday against SC Freiburg . In the second half of the season he scored six goals, including a brace in a 4-2 win against Stuttgart. With seven Bundesliga goals after Arturo Vidal (ten goals), he was the second best goalscorer in his team, which was second in the table.

At the beginning of the 2011/12 season, Kießling and his team lost 3: 4 after extra time against Dynamo Dresden in the first round of the DFB Cup , after being substituted on with Michael Ballack in the 63rd minute when the score was 3: 0 . In the first half of the Bundesliga he made three assists and scored three goals. On September 13, 2011, he made his first Champions League game, which was lost 2-0 to Chelsea . In the third game against FC Valencia, Kießling headed his first Champions League goal to 1: 1, Leverkusen lost 3: 1. On matchday 20, after eleven goalless Bundesliga games, Kießling scored 1-0 in a 2-2 draw against VfB Stuttgart , which means he had scored at least one goal in every game against Stuttgart since the 2-4 defeat on February 7, 2009. Two weeks later he scored two goals for the first time this season in the game against FC Augsburg . He also scored twice on the 31st matchday in a 3: 3 against Hertha BSC . He had scored against all current Bundesliga clubs. On the last day of the match he scored three goals in a 4-1 win against his former club 1. FC Nürnberg . With 13 goals in the second half of the season, Kießling had improved compared to the first half of the season. He scored a total of 16 goals, making him the most successful German goalscorer in 2012. Until then, he had only been more successful in the previous season. With his 13th goal of the season to win 1-0 against Hannover 96 , he also made his second-best season for Bayer Leverkusen. At the end of the season, Stefan Kießling finished fifth with Leverkusen in the Bundesliga and made it to the round of 16 in the Champions League .

Stefan Kießling (2014)

After a mixed start to the 2012/13 Bundesliga season with only one win in the first four games, the team improved with Kießling, who scored seven goals in the next eight games up to matchday 12. As one of the few players in the Bayer team, he showed consistently good performances, which was also evident from the points scored in the first half of the season: he scored twelve goals by the winter break, which made him top the list of goalscorers, as well as two assists , which is why he returned to the National team was discussed. On the 21st matchday in the game against Borussia Mönchengladbach (3: 3) Stefan Kießling scored his 100th goal in the Bundesliga. At the end of the season he was third in the Bundesliga with Bayer Leverkusen and qualified for the Champions League . In the Europa League they reached the sixteenth finals, while in the DFB Cup they were eliminated in the last sixteen. In the Bundesliga, Kießling secured the top scorer in front of Robert Lewandowski with 25 goals this season . He exceeded both his previous record from the 2009/10 season (21 goals) and Ulf Kirsten's club record from the 1996/97 and 1997/98 seasons (22 goals each). He also scored the opening goal eleven times this season, which is also a record. He scored one goal each in the Europa League and in the DFB Cup. In the election for Germany's Footballer of the Year , Kießling came in sixth as in 2010.

In the 2012/13 season there was speculation about offers from various clubs. Nevertheless, on July 26, 2013, Kießling extended his contract with Bayer 04 Leverkusen for the third time ahead of schedule until June 30, 2017.

The "Phantom Gate" (2013)

On the 9th Bundesliga matchday, Kießling scored a phantom goal to make it 2-0 in a 2-1 win against TSG 1899 Hoffenheim . His header missed the goal and the ball only flew into the goal behind the goal line through a hole in the outer net. Nevertheless, the referee Felix Brych decided on goal. When asked whether the ball actually went into the goal, Kießling replied that he had not seen it. TSG Hoffenheim had lodged a protest against the game evaluation at the DFB because of the incident , but it was rejected because it was a factual decision by the referee that was final according to the rules. This goal changed Kießling's public image for a long time: while he had previously garnered sympathy outside of Leverkusen due to his honest nature and not least because of his combative and running-intensive style of play, he and his family faced a lot of hostility afterwards. Among other things, this meant that he had to take his Facebook page offline.

On October 23, 2013, Kießling scored two goals in a Champions League game for the first time in a 4-0 win against Shakhtar Donetsk . From December 7, 2013 to March 8, 2014, Kießling only scored one goal in twelve competitive games and showed fluctuating performance, which is why he was in the 2-1 defeat against Paris Saint-Germain for the first time since December 6, 2012 (then the unimportant last Group game of the Europa League 2012/13 against Rapid Vienna ) was not used in a competitive game of the Werkself. He then scored five goals in the following six Bundesliga games before tearing a hamstring on April 26, 2014 (32nd matchday) in the game against Borussia Dortmund and was out for the rest of the season. So he missed a Bundesliga game from Bayer Leverkusen for the first time since matchday 16 of the 2010/11 season. In the Bundesliga, Kießling scored 15 goals and was the most successful goalscorer for Leverkusen.

Kießling during the Champions League game against Zenit St. Petersburg (2014)

In the first round of the 2014/15 DFB Cup , Kießling scored five goals, including a hat trick , in a 6-0 win over sixth division club Alemannia Waldalgesheim . In the Champions League playoff games against FC Copenhagen (3: 2; 4: 0) he scored three of the seven goals and was thus involved in qualifying for the premier class. In the game against Borussia Dortmund (1st matchday) he also scored the goal to make it 2-0. This was followed by the longest goalless time of his career in the Bundesliga with 859 minutes before he took the 1-0 lead in a 3-1 win over Hannover 96 . With his 1-0 winning goal at Hertha BSC on February 4, 2015 (19th match day), he scored the opening goal of his team in the Bundesliga for the 50th time , which was a new record.

Identity figure and end of career (2015-2018)

With his 1-1 goal against TSG 1899 Hoffenheim , Kießling set a new record on August 15, 2015, which Schalke's Klaas-Jan Huntelaar set on the same day: Both players managed to play four consecutive seasons in the Bundesliga on 1. Matchday to be met. In addition, they qualified again for the Champions League in games against Lazio Rome . In the following 23 competitive games, however, Kießling only scored one more time; On October 28, 2015, he scored the fifth goal in the second round of the DFB Cup in a 6-0 win against FC Viktoria Köln . Soon ousted by the regular newcomer Chicharito , a change during the winter break was discussed in the media: Although Hannover 96 tried hard to get Kießling interested, he stayed in Leverkusen and was able - also thanks to the system change by coach Roger Schmidt on two strikers - re-establish as a regular in the second half of the season. The key moment was the 5-0 win against Borussia Mönchengladbach , in which Kießling scored two goals on December 12, 2015 and prepared two more for Chicharito. This was the first time he was directly involved in four goals in a game. In April 2016, he finally extended his contract until June 30, 2018 with the option of a further year and subsequent employment in the association.

Due to hip problems, Kießling missed a large part of the preparation for the season and was therefore not considered due to the lack of training at the beginning of the season. The striker thus missed the first matchday of a Bundesliga season for the first time in his time at Bayer 04 Leverkusen. On September 21, 2016 (4th match day) he was nominated again for the game against FC Augsburg for the first time and also made his comeback in this game (0-0). Due to the great competition in the storm, which became even greater with summer newcomer Kevin Volland , and due to his repeatedly injured hip, Kießling finally lost the place he had regained in the second half of last season under Roger Schmidt, who only started him twice. Only after the coach change to Tayfun Korkut did his situation in the club improve; he was regularly called up again and took over the role of team captain after Lars Bender and Ömer Toprak were injured . For the first time in his time with the Werkself he fought relegation; only on matchday 33 did the team secure their relegation with a 2-2 draw in the Rheinderby against 1. FC Cologne . With the 1: 2 goal, Kießling played a decisive role in the rescue.

After the season, the striker publicly thought about an early retirement, but after a conversation with the new Leverkusen head coach Heiko Herrlich decided to stay at Leverkusen until his contract ended at the end of the 2017/18 season. However, since he continued to struggle with hip and back problems and Kevin Volland , Kai Havertz and Lucas Alario offered three alternatives in the storm, Kießling was rarely considered for the squad in the 2017/18 season and was only used eight times. In the 2-1 win against VfL Wolfsburg on March 3, 2018, Kießling came on in the 88th minute, making his 400th appearance as the 66th player in Bundesliga history. He played his last professional game on May 12, 2018 (34th matchday) in a 3-2 win against Hannover 96 , when he came on for Lars Bender in the 83rd minute .

Activity in the amateur sector (since 2018)

On September 9, 2018, Kießling played a game for FV Schelklingen-Hausen from Schelklingen in Baden-Württemberg in the district league A1 Danube . Theo Trajkowski, former coach of the club and best man at Kießling's wedding, had already confirmed in August that he had a player pass for the club. So Trajkowski was able to convince Kießling to play for the club. Kießling stated that he wanted to play for FV Schelklingen-Hausen in at least two more games this season , but this one game remained. In an interview a few days after the game, Kießling said that he had pain in his hip again the day after the game. He could not rule out being dependent on an artificial hip in the future .

U national teams

For the first time in a DFB selection Kießling was used on April 21, 2004, when he was in the U-20 national team in the game against Switzerland (1: 1) in the starting line-up and was substituted at half time for Mario Fillinger . In the same year he was also part of the 2006 team , the perspective selection for the 2006 World Cup , in the game against Poland (1: 2). Kießling made his debut in the U-21 national team on February 8, 2005 in the U-21 European Championship qualifier against Wales (4-0). In his second game in the U-21 national team on March 25, 2005 against England (2-2), Kießling had to borrow shoes from goalkeeper Michael Rensing because he had forgotten his own shoes in the hotel because of the excitement. However, these shoes were a few sizes too small. Nevertheless, Kießling scored the 1-0 lead, but later had to be substituted for Roberto Hilbert due to aching feet .

Although Kießling's nomination for the upcoming World Cup in his own country was discussed in advance , he traveled to Portugal with the U-21 team for the European Championship . There the team failed in the group stage to hosts Portugal, Serbia and France; Kießling was used in all three games. After the tournament, he was named captain of the U-21 national team in August 2006. He scored four goals in 15 games between 2005 and 2006.

A national team

On March 28, 2007 he came in the game against Denmark (0-1) for his first appearance in the senior national team . His second appearance was almost two years later on February 11, 2009 against Norway (0: 1). After his good start in the 2009/10 Bundesliga season, there was soon speculation in the media about a renewed use. However, it took more than six months until November 18 before Kießling was nominated again. In this friendly against Ivory Coast (2-2) he made his starting line-up debut. His first victory in the senior national team he achieved in the charity match against Malta (3-0), in which he played through for the first time.

On May 6, 2010 he was appointed to the extended squad by national coach Joachim Löw and shortly before leaving for South Africa in the final squad for the 2010 World Cup . He made his World Cup debut on June 27 in the round of 16 in a 4-1 win over England , when he came on for Mesut Özil in the 83rd minute . He was also substituted on for Cacau in the 3-2 win in the game for third place against Uruguay in the 73rd minute . Although Kießling offered himself a few opportunities to shoot in the closing stages of the game, he remained without a goal. With the 3-2 win over Uruguay, Kießling finally finished third with the German national team. On October 5, Kießling was awarded the Silver Laurel Leaf as one of the 23 World Cup players, but was not present at the award ceremony due to injury.

Although Kießling had scored 13 goals in the second half of the 2011/12 season , he was not nominated for the 2012 European Championship . However, Löw rewarded Kießling's accuracy (25 Bundesliga goals in the 2012 calendar year) by not excluding him from the national team. Even after his strong start to the 2012/13 season at Bayer, the return of Kießling was discussed intensely, who was "furiously annoyed" by the discussions, but was not ticking off his career in the national team at the time. Kießling canceled a participation in the USA trip directly after the 2012/13 season, although many failures would have given him great chances of being nominated again after three years.

In August 2013, Kießling - the top scorer with 25 goals in the previous season - stated in an interview that he would never play again as a national player under Löw, unless there was a “need”.

Style of play

Kießling has often been referred to as the prototype of the modern striker game. His style of play was known for being the first man to destroy the opponent's build-up game, to fight for balls himself and also to shield high balls and to put the other players in the limelight. Not infrequently he was to be found in his own penalty area due to his large radius of action. Furthermore, his game was very intense duels; As a result, he played 2567 duels in the Bundesliga in five years up to 2012, 500 more than any other player in the league. Also in the 2014/15 season he played 1148 tackles. Since 2008 he has been the player from the top 5 leagues in Europe who has won the most tackles, with 2,481 duels won, ahead of Lionel Messi and Eden Hazard .

While Kießling has had individual outstanding phases with a high hit rate several times in his career, such as his most successful season 2012/13 as the top scorer, he also repeatedly experienced periods in which, as a consistently seeded striker, he hardly ever scored goals was often attributed to his special style of playing. In the recent past he has had many offensive teammates in midfield with Heung-min Son , Sidney Sam , Hakan Çalhanoğlu , Karim Bellarabi and Julian Brandt , who often tended to shots on goal instead of generating assists.
