Dirk Kurtenbach (born August 2, 1964 in Bochum ) is a former German soccer player and coach.

Life

Born in Bochum, Kurtenbach grew up in Wulsdorf on the North Sea coast. He played at TSV Wulsdorf in his youth and moved to SC Fortuna Köln at the age of 19 . On August 6, 1983, he made his professional debut in the 2nd Bundesliga in a 2-2 draw at SG Union Solingen when he came on for Eduard Kirschner shortly before the end. In 1986 the striker moved to league competitor Stuttgarter Kickers . With the Swabians he established himself together with the former Polish international striker Kazimierz Kmiecik as an efficient striker duo. While the seventh place in the table jumped out in the second division season 1986/87 , the second division moved into the DFB Cup 1986/87 into the final. After a 1-0 lead in the meantime, the favored Hamburger SV turned the game around and won the game 3-1 after two goals in the last five minutes. With a total of eight goals scored in the course of the competition, he was the top scorer of the DFB Cup . In the following season, the successful duo under the new coach Manfred Krafft moved into the second member, newcomer Demir Hotić and Bernd Grabosch , who joined Kickers in early 1987, established themselves as a new attack formation during the second division season 1987/88 . The competitors benefited from Kurtenbach's bad luck with an injury, who had shone on the second match day as a four-time scorer in the 7-0 home win over 1. FC Saarbrücken , and after his forced break from mid-September was only used as a substitute for a while from the autumn . In March he returned to the starting line-up before he was left out until the end of the season after a red card at the end of April in a 1-1 draw with fellow rivals for promotion to SG Wattenscheid 09 .

Despite the rise of the Kickers in the Bundesliga , Kurtenbach changed clubs in the summer of 1988 and joined the first division club SV Waldhof Mannheim . Here, however, he only made four appearances and moved to the second division Hertha BSC in the winter . Under coach Werner Fuchs , he rose with the club at the end of the second division season 1989/90 also in the Bundesliga, but again had not got beyond the status of a supplementary player. Therefore he returned to Fortuna Cologne in 1990, but a calf injury meant the early end of his career.

1997 Kurtenbach tried briefly as a coach at Sparta Bremerhaven .

Kurtenbach was a junior national player. With the U16 selection, he was in the final of the U-16 European Football Championship in 1982 , but had to admit defeat to the Italian selection.
