DFB Cup 1983/84
The 1984 DFB Cup winner was FC Bayern Munich . For the first time this year, a final was decided by a penalty shootout . Lothar Matthäus , who played for Borussia Mönchengladbach , shot his penalty over the goal. Since Matthäus' move to Bayern was already certain, the miss received a certain explosiveness. However, two more shooters shot after him. The final was played on May 31, 1984 in Frankfurt am Main and was the last final that was not played in the Berlin Olympic Stadium.
The first semi-final between Borussia Mönchengladbach and Werder Bremen was characterized by guided tours that changed several times. Bremen converted a 1: 3 deficit within six minutes up to the 82nd minute of the game by Uwe Reinders in a 4: 3 lead, but had to accept the renewed equalization by Hans-Jörg Criens in stoppage time and lost the game with 4 : 5 after extension. In the semifinals between FC Bayern and FC Schalke 04, Olaf Thon , who turned 18 the day before the game, scored three goals for the “miners” at 6: 6 after extra time.
Defending champion 1. FC Köln failed in the round of 16 at Hannover 96 .
In their subsequent final participation in the European Cup Winners' Cup, Bayern were eliminated in the semi-finals against eventual cup winners FC Everton .
