Hans-Günter Bruns (born November 15, 1954 in Mülheim an der Ruhr ) is a former German soccer player and today's soccer coach . He spent most of his playing career at Borussia Mönchengladbach , with whom he won the 1979 UEFA Cup , the club's last European title to date.
Career
Bruns only signed up for a football club in his hometown when he was 11, after having only played football on the street for many years. At the age of 17 he moved to Schalke 04.
In the Bundesliga he was active from 1973 to 1990 for FC Schalke 04 , SG Wattenscheid 09 , Fortuna Düsseldorf and Borussia Mönchengladbach . In his first years as a professional he played in midfield , later mainly in the libero position. In 1979 he was in the squad of Borussia Mönchengladbach's team, which won the UEFA Cup, and scored one goal each against Benfica Lisbon and Manchester City on the way to the finals against FK Red Star Belgrade , in which he did not participate . In 1980 he won the DFB Cup with Fortuna Düsseldorf , and in 1984 he and Borussia Mönchengladbach lost to Bayern Munich on penalties in the final of the same competition .
He played four times for the German national team in 1984 and was on the squad for the 1984 European Championship in France .
Bruns is responsible for one of the most famous post hits in Bundesliga history. In the 1983/84 season he sprinted in Munich in the game against Bayern with a solo run past the opposing back team over the entire field. His shot on goal hit the left inside post, the ball rolled on the goal line to the right post and from there jumped back into the field, where the Munich defense could then clear.
After retiring from professional football, Bruns initially worked as an insurance agent. In addition, he coached Adler Osterfeld in the Oberliga Nordrhein , later VfB Speldorf in his home town of Mülheim and SSVg Velbert . From 2006 he was the coach of Rot-Weiß Oberhausen and led the club back in 2007 as a champion of the Oberliga Nordrhein in the regional league and in the following season in 2008 in the 2nd Bundesliga . In the 2008/09 season he switched to the position of sporting director at Rot-Weiß Oberhausen and thus swapped tasks with Jürgen Luginger . After Luginger had made his post available on February 1, 2010 due to a persistent negative series, Bruns stepped in as an interim trainer. However, on April 22, 2010 it was announced that he will hold both offices permanently in the 2010/11 season. On February 22, 2011 it was decided after the 1: 3 against VfL Osnabrück and due to disagreements within the club to part. Hans Günter Bruns was replaced by Theo Schneider a day later .
On September 22, 2011 Bruns was introduced as the new coach of the regional division Wuppertaler SV Borussia . There he succeeded Karsten Hutwelker , from whom the club had separated three days earlier. In November 2012, Bruns was released from his duties in Wuppertal. After a half-year break, he took over the coaching position at SSVg Velbert again in April 2013 , but had to give it up again in November 2013 due to the club's sporting downturn.
In April 2014 the Oberhausen regional league team DJK Arminia Klosterhardt announced that they had signed Bruns as head coach for the new 2014/15 season. There he followed Michael Lorenz . After two successful years in the regional league, Bruns was released from the club, which was in danger of relegation, in April 2017, and Michael Lorenz took over again. In November 2017 Bruns took over the coaching position at the district league club Blau-Weiß Oberhausen-Lirich. They separated in October 2019.
