The lawn sports club Mülheim an der Ruhr eV was a sports club from Mülheim an der Ruhr in North Rhine-Westphalia , which became known for its successful handball department .

The Union

RSV Mülheim was created under its current name in 1919 through the merger of Mülheimer SV and VfR Heißen. But its roots go back longer. In 1907 the Mülheimer Spielverein and the 1st Mülheimer Football Club merged in 1906 to form the Mülheimer Sportverein. Therefore, the year 1907 was considered the year of foundation for a long time, before a historian proved that hot football was played in a predecessor club of the VfR as early as 1902 . At a general meeting in 1973, the year 1902 was finally set as the year of foundation. In May 2015 the RSV Mülheim merged with the Holthausener Turnverein to form SV Heißen .

Men's handball at RSV Mülheim

As early as 1924 handball was played at the RSV. In 1936, Edgar Reinhardt, a club member with the German national handball team, won gold at the Summer Olympics in Berlin .

The RSV handball players experienced their heyday between 1947 and 1961. At first the men were successful. On August 3, 1947 we won in Oberhausen in front of 25,000 spectators by an 8: 6 against SV Waldhof Mannheim , the German Championship in 1947 in the field handball . Another triumph followed on June 26, 1949, when the RSV in Hamburg won the final tournament for the German field handball championship in 1949 7: 6 in overtime in front of 25,000 spectators against the SV Hamburg police . In those years it was not uncommon for up to 20,000 spectators to attend the RSV's home games.

In the same year the championship in indoor handball was won at the interzone championship in 1949 in Münster. Since this title was achieved on October 1, 1949, before the establishment of the German Handball Federation, official recognition was denied.

At the indoor handball finals in Berlin in 1950 , they came in 5th. At the 1952 championship in Dortmund , the RSV reached the semi-finals, but lost to VfL Sportfreunde Berlin with 3:12. Third place was secured with an 11: 8 win over THW Kiel . In the final round in 1953 , the RSV retired despite a 6: 4 victory against the eventual runner-up THW Kiel somewhat unhappy after a decision-making round and finished fifth. In 1954 in Krefeld , the last time they took part, the West Germans came in sixth. When the two-track handball Bundesliga started its first season in 1966 , the RSV was one of the founding members. After relegation and immediate resurgence, the last time was in the 1969/70 season . In the 2013/14 season (as of 3/2014) the RSV handball players played in the Rhein-Ruhr district league .

Women's handball at RSV Mülheim

The RSV handball players first stepped into the national limelight in 1959 when they qualified for the German indoor handball championship, which was held in Hamburg for the second time . Among the six participants (five regional champions and the vice of the organizing regional association Hamburg) it was enough to place third. In 1960 one benefited from the "wildcard" for the organizer's runner-up, because the event took place in Münster . In the semifinals there was a clash with the west champions SC Greven 09 , which the RSV won 4: 3 after a 4-1 lead. In the final on March 12, 1960 against 1. FC Nürnberg , RSV was already 7-3 at half-time and won the title for the first time with 10-5. A year later things were more dramatic in Ketsch in northern Baden . After the 5-3 semi-final success over SSC Südwest Berlin , the Mülheimers met in the final against the surprisingly strong Südwestmeister TV Vorwärts Frankfurt , who was 3-2 in the lead after the first half. Shortly before the end of the game, Mülheim equalized to 3: 3. After the first extra time it was 4: 4, and after a total of 44 minutes of playing time the RSV players had secured their second German championship title with 5: 4. It was the last appearance at a final, because from now on teams like SC Greven 09 (1962) and above all Bayer Leverkusen (from 1963 west champions seven times in a row) dominated the action in the west. When the first season of the two-track Bundesliga began in autumn 1975 , RSV Mülheim was not there. In 1979 the A-youth made it into the semi-finals for the German championship, and in 1983 they just missed promotion to the 1st Bundesliga in the relegation games against Bayer 05 Uerdingen . In the 2008/09 season, the RSV handball players started in the Niederrhein Association League .
