German handball championship 1953

The German handball championship in 1954 was the fifth final round of the German championship in indoor handball for men organized by the DHB . It was played on February 13 and 14, 1954 in front of 7,000 spectators in the ice rink in Krefeld , in a final tournament with a group phase in the preliminary round.

The indoor handball championship season 1953/54 took a very surprising course for most observers: The TC Frisch Auf Göppingen was first association champion in the Württemberg state association for the first time in the club's history , then prevailed as the South German champion and finally won the final of the German championship against the favorite series champions of the past few years, the SV Police Hamburg , with 10: 7.

This heralded a changing of the guard in indoor handball: The era of the police sports club from Hamburg was over, in the following years the Göppingen would shape the sport of handball in Germany. Their player-trainer Bernhard Kempa played a decisive role in this success and managed to lead a noticeably young team ("Kempa boys") to the highest level of play. Remarkably, in the same season in 1954, the masterpiece was also achieved in field handball , Göppingen was handball double champion in 1954.

mode

There was also a new tournament mode in this final round, but this time, after the experiments of recent years, a form was finally found that would last for the next decade.

Unlike in the previous year, the championship was played over a weekend and in one place. The starting field was reduced to six teams, qualified were the champions of the five regional associations, plus the runner-up of the respective host association, this year the West German handball association . In two preliminary round groups, the first two teams qualified for the semi-finals, the bottom of each group played for fifth place.

The TC Frisch Auf Göppingen (regional association champion south), the Reinickendorfer Füchse (regional / regional association champion Berlin) and RSV Mülheim (regional association champion West) played in the preliminary round group A.

In the other group, the defending champion SV Police Hamburg (regional association champion north), TuS Eintracht Minden (vice champion regional association west) and TSG Haßloch (regional association champion south-west) met.

The playing time was 2 × 20 minutes. If there was a tie after the end of the preliminary round, playoffs were planned for placement, as the goal difference or the direct comparison were not yet taken into account - as was usual later on.

Tournament course

While the SV Police Hamburg played their way through their preliminary round with confidence, as expected, and demonstrated a class difference to their opponents, the sensation began in Group A: the youth group from Göppingen made it to the semi-finals with a narrow success against Mülheim. And also the second newcomer in the starting field, the Reinickendorfer Füchse, whose big time as Füchse Berlin would come decades later, prevailed against the old master from Mülheim.

Even the Göppingen success against Minden in the semifinals was considered a surprise. But since the Hamburg police had confidently put the Reinickendorfer Füchse in their place in the other game, the course of the final game of the two semi-final winners was not expected in this form, especially since the Göppingen had already used more energy with the decider against the Reinickendorfer Füchse. Until the break of the final, the youthful carefree of Göppingen had initially shown itself to be superior to the experience of Hamburg (1: 0, 4: 1), but then the game seemed to normalize (half time 4: 3), especially shortly after the restart Compensation for the hamburger fell. Obviously this was the wake-up signal for the "Kempa boys", because within a few minutes they completely dismantled the opponent's defense with a 6-0 run and pulled away to 10: 4. The fact that Hamburg scored three more goals towards the end of the game was just cosmetic results.

Contemporary observers reported that the audience in Krefeld was enthusiastic about the youthful enthusiasm with which the newcomer to the finals presented himself and "played the experienced Hamburg police officers on the wall".
