German handball championship 1956

The German handball championship in 1957 was the eighth final round of the German championship in indoor handball for men organized by the DHB . It was played on March 9 and 10, 1957 in front of 7,000 spectators in Kiel's Ostseehalle , in a final tournament with a group phase in the preliminary round.

The later German record champion THW Kiel was able to use the home advantage and celebrate his first indoor title this year; In the final, the Kielers defeated TC Frisch Auf Göppingen 7: 5.

mode

The champions of the five regional associations as well as the runner-up of the host association, this year the North German Handball Association, were eligible to participate in the final round . In two preliminary round groups, the first two teams qualified for the semi-finals, the bottom of each group played for fifth place.

In the preliminary round group A, the THW Kiel (regional association champion north), the TSG Haßloch (regional association champion south-west) and the TC Frisch Auf Göppingen (regional association champion south) played.

In the other group, VfL Wolfsburg (runner-up regional association north), defending champion Berliner SV 1892 (regional / regional association champion Berlin) and SV Westerholt (regional association champion West) met each other.

The playing time was 2 × 20 minutes.

Tournament course

The tournament winner, the team of TV Hassee-Winterbek from Kiel around the record national player at the time, Hein Dahlinger , had, according to contemporary observers, distinguished itself primarily through the consistency and stability in defense; When attacking, they could trust that Dahlinger, as the “outstanding player personality” of the tournament, could play out his individual strengths in the decisive moments. This was enough to withstand the Göppingen attack vortex both in the preliminary round and in the final.

The still very young Göppingen, on the other hand, driven again by the now 35-year-old Bernhard Kempa in his last season as an active handball player, could not use their attack strength consistently enough. This was particularly noticeable in the semi-final game against last year's champions BSV 1892: Frisch Auf led 5-0 after five minutes, but then broke down and happily won 7-6 because the BSV rejected a seven-meter throw in the last second of the game .
