German handball championship 1957

The German handball championship in 1958 was the ninth final round of the German indoor handball championship for men organized by the DHB . The group stage of the preliminary round was played on March 22nd in Sankt Ingbert, the final round on March 23rd in Haßloch.

The new title holder was the TC Frisch Auf Göppingen for the third time after the finals in 1954 and 1955 . In the final, Frisch Auf defeated Berliner SV 1892 8: 5.

The team thus laid the foundation for the club's success story in the years to come: Frisch Auf set the record for SV Police Hamburg with four championships in a row between 1958 and 1961 , and another title win in 1965 . With a total of seven championship titles, Frisch Auf Göppingen was the most successful team in German indoor handball before the introduction of the Bundesliga for the 1966/67 season .

The champions of the five regional associations as well as the runner-up of the host association, this year the Southwest German handball association, were eligible to participate in the final round . In two preliminary round groups, the first two teams qualified for the semi-finals, the bottom of each group played for fifth place.

In the preliminary round group A, TC Frisch Auf Göppingen (Regional Association Champion South), TSG Haßloch (Regional Association Champion Southwest) and SV Westerholt (Regional Association Champion West) played.

In the other group, VfL Wolfsburg (regional association champion north), Berliner SV 1892 (regional / regional association champion Berlin) and SV Darmstadt 98 (runner-up regional association southwest) met each other.

The playing time was 2 × 20 minutes; in the event of a tie after regular playing time, an extension of 2 × 5 minutes was provided.

Tournament course

“It was a victory for technique, tactics and nerves”, summed up the then national coach Werner Vick the course of the tournament. Frisch Auf seemed physically inferior to the other top teams, but also played without the guarantees of success of the last few years - Horst Singer had changed clubs, Bernhard Kempa was 'only' the coach of Göppingen - the more successful handball, the "Kempa boys" also had in all four games the nerve strength to set the decisive goals in the last few minutes. And the necessary luck came: In the final, with the final whistle of regular time, the last throw from Berlin only hit the post of the Göppingen goal.
