The German handball championship in 1961 was the twelfth final round of the German championship in indoor handball for men organized by the DHB . It was played on March 25th and 26th in front of 6,000 spectators in the Berlin Sportpalast , in a final tournament with a group phase in the preliminary round.
For the fourth time in a row and for the sixth time in total, the TC Frisch Auf Göppingen became the new German champion. In the final, Frisch Auf defeated VfL Wolfsburg 5-3.

The champions of the five regional associations as well as the runner-up of the host association, this year the Berlin handball association, were eligible to participate in the final round . In two preliminary round groups, the first two teams qualified for the semi-finals, the bottom of each group played for fifth place.
In the preliminary round group A, the Berliner SV 1892 (regional / regional association champion Berlin), the TV Homburg-Erbach 05 (regional association champion Southwest) and SV Bayer 04 Leverkusen (regional association champion West) played.
In the other group, VfL Wolfsburg (regional association champion north), defending champion TC Frisch Auf Göppingen (regional association champion south), and SV Teutonia Haselhorst (runner-up regional / regional association Berlin) met.
The playing time was 2 × 20 minutes.
Tournament course
The favorites were able to prevail in the preliminary rounds, with Northern champions VfL Wolfsburg defying the high-flyer from Göppingen in recent years. The Göppingen, handicapped by several injuries, were also behind in the final at the break before the record champions' routine was the decisive factor - in a final in which both teams were more concerned with safety than a fast combination game.
