German handball championship 1955

The German handball championship in 1956 was the seventh final round of the German championship in indoor handball for men organized by the DHB . It was played on March 3 and 4, 1956 in the Berlin Sportpalast , in a final tournament with a group phase in the preliminary round. The preliminary round matches on March 3rd saw 6,000, and the final round the next day saw 7,000 spectators.

The Berliner SV 1892 won the title of German handball champion in the hall for the first time officially, after the zone championship 1948 , which was not recognized by the DHB . The final against THW Kiel , won 3: 2, was the lowest goal of all final games in the history of these final tournaments.

mode

The champions of the five regional associations as well as the runner-up of the host association, this year the Berlin handball association, were eligible to participate in the final round . In two preliminary round groups, the first two teams qualified for the semi-finals, the bottom of each group played for fifth place.

In the preliminary round group A played the BSV Solingen 98 (regional association champion West), the Reinickendorfer Füchse (regional / regional association champion Berlin) and the defending champion TC Frisch Auf Göppingen (regional association champion south).

In the other group, the THW Kiel (regional association champion north), the Berliner SV 1892 (vice champion regional / state association Berlin) and the TSG Haßloch (regional association champion south-west) met each other.

The playing time was 2 × 20 minutes; in the event of a tie after regular playing time, an extension of 2 × 5 minutes was provided. The game for third place between Solingen and Göppingen was still a draw after extra time and was only decided in a second extra time.

Tournament course

The THW Kiel eliminated the two previous master clubs on its way to the final - the four-time champions SV Police Hamburg already in the qualification at the regional championships in northern Germany, the champion of the last two years, TC Frisch Auf Göppingen, in the semi-finals of this final round. The new German champion BSV 1892, on the other hand, was only qualified for the finals as runner-up of the Berlin Association, because the regulations provided for a second starting place for the host association. The BSV narrowly won the preliminary round match against the THW, but both clubs qualified for the semi-finals, defeated the opponents of the other preliminary round group and therefore met again in the final.

In a “dramatic final” both teams were initially careful not to concede a goal: no goal was scored in the first 12 minutes of the first half. Then the Kielers were able to pull away a little 2-0, but in the second half the Berliners were able to equalize the lead and set the decisive third goal in overtime four minutes before the end.

In the game for third place, the West German champions from Solingen surprisingly prevailed against the favored Göppingen after two extra times.
