German handball championship 1962

The German handball championship in 1963 was the 14th final round of the German championship in indoor handball for men organized by the DHB . It was played on February 16 and 17 in the Killesberghalle in Stuttgart, in a final tournament with a group phase in the preliminary round.

Last year's champion, THW Kiel , was able to defend its title and won its third German championship with a 10: 3 in the final against OSC Berlin .

mode

The champions of the five regional associations as well as the runner-up of the regional association Southwest were eligible to participate in the final round. In two preliminary round groups, the first two teams qualified for the semi-finals, the bottom of each group played for fifth place.

In the preliminary round group A, the OSC Berlin (regional / regional association champion Berlin), the TV Großwallstadt (regional association master Southwest) and the TC Frisch Auf Göppingen (regional association master South) played.

In the other group, VfL Gummersbach (Regional Association Champion West), TV Homburg-Erbach 05 (Vice Champion Regional Association Southwest) and the defending champion THW Kiel (Regional Association Champion North) met.

The playing time was 2 × 20 minutes.

Tournament course

In the preliminary round, the future tournament winner from Kiel still had a hard time, against the Gummersbachers who had qualified for the first time for the final round, the "Zebras" even suffered a narrow defeat. The semi-final and the final, however, were won by the Kielers in a superior manner, neither the record champions from Göppingen, whose heyday seemed to be over, nor the OSC Berlin knew how to find an answer to the force of the old and new champions. Particularly noteworthy: Hein Dahlinger , now 40 years old, proved to be indestructible and was once again the "conductor and engine" of the Kiel game.
