The German handball championship in 1965 was the 16th final round of the German championship in indoor handball for men organized by the DHB . It was played in a round-robin tournament between February 20 and March 14 at different venues; the final took place on March 14th in front of more than 4,000 spectators in the Killesberghalle in Stuttgart.
The TC Frisch Auf Göppingen , not qualified in the previous year, came back successfully. With a 13:12 in the final against TSV Grün-Weiß Dankersen , Frisch Auf was German handball champion for the seventh time in the club's history .
mode
For the first time since the 1954 tournament , the German Handball Federation changed the mode of the final round: In two preliminary round groups, the eight strongest teams in the regional championships played against each other, the five champions of the regional associations, plus the West German, Berlin and South German runners-up. The two group winners played the German champions in a final; there were no placement games.
In the preliminary round group A, the TSV Grün-Weiß Dankersen (Regional Association Master West), the Police SV Berlin (Regional / State Association Master Berlin), the SG Leutershausen (Vice Champion Regional Association South) and the TuS 1860 Neunkirchen (Regional Association Master Southwest).
In the other group, the defending champion Berliner SV 1892 (vice champion regional / regional association Berlin), TC Frisch Auf Göppingen (regional association champion south), VfL Gummersbach (vice champion regional association west) and THW Kiel (regional association champion north) met each other.
This year, for the first time, the playing time was the 2 × 30 minutes that has been common in indoor handball since then.
Tournament course
In both preliminary round groups, the later final opponents from Dankersen and Göppingen prevailed undefeated:
In Group A, the West German champion Grün-Weiß Dankersen demonstrated his whole class in the first game against the police club from Berlin and threw an impressive 15 goals more than the opponent. In the other two games against the supposedly weaker opponents from Leutershausen and Neunkirchen, on the other hand, Dankersen had a hard time and won each time by just one goal difference. The decisive factor for the success of the green-whites was the final strength of the exceptional player Herbert Lübking .
In Group B, Göppingen won the first game convincingly against the defending champion Berliner SV, while the ambitious Gummersbachers did not get beyond a draw against the old master from Kiel. In a direct comparison, Frisch Auf then clearly won against Gummersbach and finally defeated THW Kiel on the last matchday in a game of patience characterized by tactics and safety.
The two teams that were to shape indoor handball in the Federal Republic of Germany in the coming seasons made their first claims in 1965: SG Leutershausen and VfL Gummersbach came second in their groups.
Since the great days of Göppingen seemed to be over - the Kempa boys "were getting on in years" - and the opponent with Lübking had the outstanding player of those years in their ranks, Dankersen was slightly favored in the final. The Göppingen were cleverer in a close game and scored the winning goal a few seconds before the final whistle.
