The SG Leutershausen ( sports community Leutershausen 1891 eV , SGL ) is a traditional sports club from Leutershausen , a district of the north Baden community of Hirschberg on Bergstrasse . The club was created in 1946 through the merger of the gymnastics club Germania 1891, founded in 1891, and the German Youth Force (DJK) founded in 1919 .

In seven popular sports departments - handball , judo , gymnastics , dance aerobics , skiing , athletics and gymnastics - around 1,100 members are currently active (as of 2016). This makes SGL the second largest sports club in Hirschberg, just after TVG Großsachsen .

The SGL is known for its handball department: since the 1950s, the SG Leutershausen has been one of the most successful sports clubs in the Baden Handball Association , both in modern indoor handball and in field handball , which used to be much more popular ; The club was one of the founding members of the respective German Bundesliga in both disciplines in the mid-1960s. The greatest successes came at the end of the 1960s: in 1968 Leutershausen became German handball champion in the hall and runner-up on the large field, in 1969, conversely, German field handball master and runner-up in the hall.

Currently (as of the 2018/19 season ) the 1st men's handball team plays in the 3rd League East .

Men's

SGL has been part of the handball establishment in Germany for more than five decades - from winning the Badischer Pokal in 1952 to the insolvency of Spielbetriebs-GmbH in 2006.

The SG Leutershausen played from the founding of the handball Bundesliga in 1966 to 40 years uninterrupted in either the highest or the second highest division in German men's handball: Leutershausen was first class for a total of 17 seasons (1966–1977, 1988/89, 1990–1995), from From 1977 to 1981 the club played in the regional handball league , the second highest division before the introduction of the 2nd handball league . And SGL was a member of the 2nd division for a total of 20 seasons (1981–1988, 1989/90, 1995–2006, 2012/13).

The SGL belonged to the field handball Bundesliga from 1967 to 1973 in all seven regular summer seasons of its short existence.

Indoor handball

1950 to 1980

The success story of the handball department in the hall began in 1952 when it won the Badischer Handball Cup. In the following time, when the leagues of the state associations were still the highest leagues in indoor handball, the SGL was Badischer Meister in 1955 for the first time and again cup winners. From 1963 to 1965 Leutershausen dominated the Baden League, was each Baden champion and in the subsequent finals in 1964 and 1966 South German champions. SGL took part in the final round of the German championship every three years, finishing fifth in 1964 and third in 1965. In the 1965/66 season, Leutershausen was only defeated by VfL Gummersbach in the final of the German championship, and was first German runner-up in the hall in 1966. SGL was thus qualified for the southern season of the new two-track Bundesliga introduced in 1966.

In the 1967/68 season , the handball village got a big hit: In the final game of the two season winners, the German indoor handball championship was won against VfL Gummersbach . Also in the following season 1968/69 Leutershausen came to the final, again against Gummersbach. This time VfL was able to take back the title and SG Leutershausen was runner-up for the second time in its history.

In the next few years, SGL played with good placements in the southern season of the Bundesliga. But when the single-track handball Bundesliga was introduced after the 1976/77 season , the SGL could not qualify for the new upper house and played in the second highest division, initially in the regional league , in the following decade .

1980 to 1995

When the 2nd Bundesliga was founded in 1981, the qualification for the new league succeeded - the then 18-year-old Leutershausen youth national players, the handball twins Michael and Ulrich Roth showed their class in the 1st team for the first time, but could not be kept in the village club. Both quickly moved to the first division, Uli Roth in 1982 to MTSV Schwabing , Michael Roth in 1983 to TuS Hofweier .

At the end of the 1980s, when the time of the small village clubs with limited financial possibilities was actually already handball history, the SGL surprisingly began to soar again. Exactly 20 years after winning the German championship, the club rose again to the first Bundesliga in the 1987/88 season , but initially could not hold the class. After the immediate resurgence in 1990, the club belonged to the elite of German handball for another five years from the 1990/91 season . In the 1991/92 season , SG Leutershausen became German runner-up for the third time in the club's history, after losing the final against SG Wallau / Massenheim , which was then overpowering . Then Leutershausen reached the semifinals of the IHF Cup 1992/93 .

1995 to 2018

In 1995 the SGL had to relegate to the 2nd handball league, in which they played until 2006.

In the summer of 2006, Spielbetriebs GmbH, which supported the Bundesliga team, had to file for bankruptcy. The team for the 2nd Bundesliga could no longer be financed, did not play a game and was the first to be relegated. However, the club waived the right to start the Regionalliga Süd in the 2007/08 season and had the first team downgraded to the fourth-class Baden-Württemberg-Oberliga (BWOL) in order to try a fundamental new beginning - led by the former professionals of the Verein, Uli Roth and Jörg Büßecker in the management and Holger Löhr in the coaching office.

After the promotion was narrowly missed on the last match day in the first league season, SGL concluded the 2008/09 season as a sovereign league champion and was able to celebrate promotion to the regional league five game days before the end of the season. There succeeded in the following season 2009/10 qualification for the new 3rd division . In 2011 , Leutershausen was already the champions of the 3rd division five game days before the end of the season, and was thus qualified for the relegation games for promotion to the newly created single-track 2nd Bundesliga, but failed in the games against the table tenth of the 2nd Bundesliga. In the following season 2011/12 Leutershausen was again 5 game days before the end of the round champions of the southern season and thus returned to the 2nd Bundesliga after six years of development work.

The 2012/13 season ended the SGL in seventeenth place in the table on a relegation place, but was able to hold the class because several third division clubs waived promotion. At the beginning of March 2014, the sporting director Uli Roth announced that the club - as previously announced and regardless of sporting success - would not apply for a license for the second division in the 2014/15 season for economic reasons and would have the team downgraded to the third division will.

In the following season they were able to take second place behind the HSG Konstanz in the 3rd league south and, due to the renunciation of several champions from other seasons, they were promoted back to the second league.

There the SGL was able to convince, especially in the first half of the season and at home games, but narrowly missed relegation at the end of the season with 32:44 points due to the worse goal difference. For the 2017/18 season, the SG Leutershausen was transferred to the eastern season of the third division, to the great annoyance of those responsible and fans. Despite a good start to the season, they finished in 6th place.

Field handball

Leutershausen was also able to celebrate great successes in field handball: In the 1956 season , SGL first attracted attention across Germany. It was not until the final of the German field handball championship that the team lost to SV Bayer 04 Leverkusen and thus became German runner-up. This success was repeated in the following 1957 season . This time the SGL lost in the final Frisch Auf Göppingen . As in indoor handball, the late 1960s were the club's most successful period on the large field. In the 1968 season , SGL became German runner-up on the large field for the third time in its history; the triumph was achieved in the field handball Bundesliga in 1969 : in the final between the champions of the southern and northern relays, the German championship was won against TSV Grün-Weiß Dankersen won.

The class could then only be held for two years, in the 2006/07 season the team had to relegate to the Baden-Württemberg league. However, the team was able to rise again after just one year in 2008. In the 2009/10 season the qualification for the newly founded 3rd division succeeded . There they managed to stay up in the 2010/11 season , but the club decided in February 2011 to forego performance-oriented women's handball from the 2011/2012 season for cost reasons and no longer reported the first women's team to play.
