German handball championship 1965

The German handball championship in 1966 was the 17th final round of the German men's indoor handball championship organized by the DHB . It was carried out in an elimination tournament between March 5th and March 26th at different venues; the final took place on March 26th in front of about 6,000 spectators in Essen's Grugahalle .

With this championship tournament, the old era in German indoor handball ended purely formally: from the 1966/67 season onwards, the championship was to be played in a two-track (south / north) handball Bundesliga .

But there was also a new development in sport. For the first time since the start of these tournaments, none of the previous championship teams had qualified for the finals. And two final “newcomers” made the championship among themselves; Both VfL Gummersbach and SG Leutershausen reached the final in the hall for the first time, after having just failed in the rounds of the previous year.

VfL Gummersbach became the new German handball champions with a 14: 9 in the final against SGL . With this first title in the club's history, VfL laid the foundation for its future success.

mode

The following clubs qualified for participation in the final round through the championships of the five regional associations:

These teams played the championship in a knockout round ; the winning teams of the preliminary round determined the two finalists via a semi-final; there were no placement games.

The playing time was 2 × 30 minutes; in the event of a tie after regular playing time, the games were decided in extra time.

Tournament course

In the elimination round, the regional associations of the four regional champions had home rights, and the latter, as expected, clearly prevailed over the three runner-ups and the Berlin master, only the south-west master Neunkirchen had some problems with the Reinickendorfer Füchsen from Berlin and needed the extension. The later champions from Gummersbach had with Hansi Schmidt the most conspicuous player in his ranks, who alone contributed 10 hits to the win against Birkenau. Bad Schwartau and Leutershausen had home rights for the semi-finals. While the North Baden team was able to use the luck of the draw and clearly distanced the Southwest champions, Gummersbach proved to be too strong for the surprise champion of the North Association from Schleswig-Holstein even after a long journey.

The final in Essen was - with 3,000 Gummersbach strollers in the Grugahalle - actually a home game for the already favored Gummersbachers, who let themselves be overrun by Leutershausen in the first half, at half time the village club was surprisingly 8: 5 in the lead. In the second half of the game the greater strength and better condition of the Gummersbachers prevailed, while the SGL only threw one goal, Gummersbach scored nine goals and deservedly won. In this final, however, a problem emerged which was to worsen in the following years: Both teams tried to compensate for playful deficits through excessive severity, the DHB President Ernst Feick spoke of a "handball catch".

Qualification for the new indoor handball Bundesliga

At the beginning of September 1965 it was decided at a DHB Bundestag that the German champions should be determined in a Bundesliga from the following season 1966/67 . Eight teams should then play in a northern and a southern relay; the respective season winners should contest the final of the German championship. It was determined that four teams each from the regional associations West and North should form the first northern relay, the first southern relay was made up of four representatives from the regional association south, three from the South West German association and one from the Berlin association. The qualification for the two relays took place at the same time as the qualification for the championship finals in 1966 between the champions and runners-up of the state associations during the regional championships of the current season 1965/66.

Surprising result of this qualification mode: None of the four previous title holders of the official indoor championships since 1950 ( SV Police Hamburg , TC Frisch Auf Göppingen , Berliner SV 1892 , THW Kiel ) could qualify for the indoor Bundesliga. Only the RSV Mülheim, which had won the interzone championship in 1949 , could be seen as "old champions".
