German handball championship 1951

The German handball championship in 1952 was the third final round of the German championship in indoor handball for men organized by the DHB . It was played in a final tournament with a group stage in the preliminary round.

The games took place on February 23 and 24, 1952 in front of 12,000 spectators in Dortmund's Westfalenhalle , the reconstruction of which had recently been completed after being completely destroyed by a bombing raid in May 1944. The handball championship was one of the first major sporting events in the arena after the grand opening on February 2, 1952.

The SV Police Hamburg was able to underline its exceptional position in German handball in the early 1950s and was German handball champion for the third time in a row . In the final, SVP defeated VfL Sportfreunde Berlin 6: 4.

mode

This third final round also produced a new mode for the third time: for the first time, not only did the five regional association champions compete against each other, but also the runner-up from the regional associations with the largest number of members, North, West and South. This meant that eight teams were qualified to take part in the final round, and they initially competed in two groups in the preliminary round to play off the pairings in the final round.

In group A, the SV Police Hamburg (regional champion north), VfL Sportfreunde Berlin (regional / regional champion Berlin), VfL Oßweil (vice champion south) and Fortuna Düsseldorf (vice champion west) played.

In group B, RSV Mülheim (regional champion west), SV Harleshausen (regional champion south), TSG Haßloch (regional champion south-west) and THW Kiel (runner-up north) met each other.

The first two teams in each group were qualified for the semifinals, the losers of the semifinals played for third place, the respective group third for fifth and the bottom of the group for seventh place in this championship.

The playing time was 2 × 20 minutes.

Tournament course

Since the favored SV Police surprisingly only finished second in the group, the semi-final match against THW Kiel and thus the new edition of the final of the North German Regional Championship three weeks earlier on 2/3. February 1952. At that time, the Hamburg Police Sports Club was able to win 9: 8 only with difficulty and very happily in the last seconds of extra time. In the semi-finals of this final round, however, the THW did not have the slightest chance against the outstandingly playing Hamburg and was outclassed with 12: 4. Sportfreunde Berlin also prevailed clearly against RSV Mülheim in the other semifinals.

In the final as well as in the game for third place, the winners took revenge for defeats against the same opponent in the group stage the day before.
