German handball championship 1954

The German handball championship in 1955 was the sixth final round of the German championship in indoor handball for men organized by the DHB . It was played on February 26 and 27, 1955 in front of 5,000 spectators in the Black Forest Hall in Karlsruhe , in a final tournament with a group phase in the preliminary round.

In the new edition of the final meeting of the previous year, the TC Frisch Auf Göppingen won their second championship title at 7: 6 against the "old master" SV Police Hamburg . The police athletes who were so successful in the post-war years were never able to build on their earlier successes; this 1955 final was the last indoor handball for which the club qualified.

mode

The champions of the five regional associations as well as the runner-up of the host association, this year the southern German handball association, were entitled to participate in the final round . In two preliminary round groups, the first two teams qualified for the semi-finals, the bottom of each group played for fifth place.

In the preliminary round group A, the SV Polizei Hamburg (regional association champion north), SV Westerholt (regional association champion west) and FC Bayern Munich (vice champion regional association south) played.

In the other group, the defending champion TC Frisch Auf Göppingen (regional association champion south), the Reinickendorfer Füchse (regional / regional association champion Berlin) and TSG Haßloch (regional association champion south-west) met each other.

The playing time was 2 × 20 minutes; in the event of a tie after regular playing time, an extension of 2 × 5 minutes was provided.

Tournament course

In their preliminary round matches and the semi-finals, the Hamburg police and Frisch Auf Göppingen clearly prevailed over the other regional champions. The strongest teams of the previous season met again in the final. There "Hamburg police [...] showed the best indoor final in its glorious handball history", according to the Hamburger Abendblatt correspondent , but in a "final full of drama" the Göppingen won 7: 6 after extra time.

In the final , of all places , Hamburg's most dangerous goalscorer for years, “Atom-Otto” Maychrzak , was completely ineffective. With 13 goals he was the top scorer of the tournament, but could not set any accents in the final because the Göppingen player-coach Bernhard Kempa let him be taken under hard man coverage. The Göppingen got off to a better start (3: 1), which the Hamburg team around the experienced Werner Vick countered before the half-time break, with 3: 4 the sides were changed. In the second half, Hamburg looked like the upcoming champions up to five minutes before the end of regular time with a score of 4: 6. Then, however, the 19-year-old high school graduate Horst Singer from Göppingen kept his nerve with two seven meters and was able to equalize. Another goal in extra time was enough for Göppingen to win the second indoor handball championship.
