life and work

Nola was a founding member of the Accademia dei Sereni from 1546–47 and known with the lutenist Luigi Dentice and Giovanni Battista d'Azzia , marchese di Laterza , a sponsor of Orlando di Lasso . From February 1563 until his death he worked as Maestro di cappella at the SS Annunziata in Naples. In this capacity, he also taught singing to the girls of the Annunziata orphanage and the deacons of the seminary.

Nola's first publication, three-part “Canzoni villanesche” in 2 volumes, appeared in 1541. They attracted the attention of contemporaries such as Orlando di Lasso, Hubert Waelrant , Adrian Willaert , Baldassare Donato , Perissone Cambio and Antonio Scandello , and were partly arranged in four parts by them. A first, four-part madrigal book from 1545 comprises 29 compositions, 22 of which are based on texts by Petrarch . A second, five-part madrigal book was published in 1564, two more are considered lost. An (undated) collection of poems by Giovanni Domenico da Nola has been published by Benacci.
