Laterza (in the local dialect Latérzə ) is a southern Italian municipality ( comune ) with 15,067 inhabitants (as of December 31, 2019) in the province of Taranto in Apulia . Laterza is about 48 kilometers northwest of Taranto , 23 kilometers east of Matera and about 55 kilometers south of Bari .

history

In the municipality there are remains of a necropolis from around 2000 BC. Later it was the Peuketeers who settled here. The name itself probably goes back to Greek settlers who named the place after the mythical Laertes .

Gravina from Laterza

Laterza Gravina is a deep erosion canyon of more than 200 meters, similar to the American Canyon. The gorge leads out of the city of Laterza and extends for 12 km in rural areas with many curves and is more than two hundred to four hundred meters deep in some points. Its very steep, almost vertical walls are often used as a natural climbing wall for climbing.

Not far away is the A14 autostrada from Bologna to Taranto. State road 7 , the penultimate stretch of which leads from Matera to Taranto, runs through the municipality itself . The nearest train station is in Matera.
