location

The place is 23 kilometers east of Taranto on the Taranto – Brindisi railway line .

history

The name of the community comes from the Latin Cryptae Aliae , which means grottos , caves and the like. When the barbarians destroyed the small villages of Rudiae and Mesocoro as well as Taranto in 960 , the inhabitants fled to such grottos, where they then lived. This resulted in various hamlets and farmhouses, including the Casale Cryptalearum , which the Normans donated to the Archbishop of Taranto in the eleventh century . At the end of the 14th century, this fiefdom was fortified by city walls.

economy

The most important feature is the ceramic production , which over the centuries has become the main economic source. She mainly deals with bricks , pots and even nativity figures . In the ceramic district, the so-called industrial area of the city, there are more than fifty workshops that have been in operation since the sixteenth century. The most characteristic products are the so-called capasone (a vase or amphora-shaped container of large size for wine or olive oil), the srulu (a type of jug for wine or water) and the pumo (a decorative object in the shape of a pine cone , which is traditionally used at the corners of the balconies). In addition, there is a state art school in the village that has been training in ceramic processing since 1889.

Taranto airfield is located near Grottaglie . The civil part is operated by the airport company SEAP, which is also responsible for the commercial airports in Bari and Brindisi . The civil part is also home to the production facilities of Alenia Aeronautica , which manufactures parts of the fuselage of the new Boeing 787 . Italian naval aviation units are stationed on the military section .
