Torricella (in the local dialect Turricèdda or Turicèdda ) is a south-eastern Italian municipality ( comune ) with 4190 inhabitants (as of December 31, 2019) in the province of Taranto in Apulia . The municipality is located about 25.5 kilometers southeast of Taranto in Salento . With its districts Torre Ovo , Librari and Truglione , the municipality is located directly on the Ionian Sea.

history

Torricella is believed to have originated in the 11th century when shepherds and farmers who previously lived on the coast settled here to be safer from Saracen raids . Only the district of Monacizzo is older.
