San Giorgio Ionico is a southern Italian municipality ( comune ) with 14,789 inhabitants (as of December 31, 2019) in the province of Taranto in Apulia . The municipality is located in northern Salento , about 10 kilometers east of Taranto .

history

The beginnings of the place are in pre-Christian times. Settlement remains from the 3rd century BC indicate a necropolis. The origin of today's place is to be sought in the Middle Ages, when refugees from Taranto sought refuge from the Saracens here . The place was first mentioned in a document, however, only in 1522; Albanian settlers had probably already come here 100 years earlier under the impression of Skanderbeg .

traffic

State road 7 leads through the village from Taranto to Grottaglie (this is the last section of the Via Appia ) or as state road 7 ter to Manduria . The Strada Statale 603 also leads to Francavilla Fontana .
