Avetrana is a municipality ( comune ) in the northern part of Salento .

geography

The community has 6,505 inhabitants (as of December 31, 2019). It is located in the Italian province of Taranto in Apulia .

history

The area around Avetrana has been populated since the Neolithic . The ancient Via Appia from Rome to Brindisi has passed here since Roman times .

The “ Avetranastop was on the Martina Franca – Lecce railway line , but has now been closed.

Attractions

  • Torrione , remains of a fort, probably of Norman origin, probably built between 1050 and 1070 during the Norman rule in Apulia, but documented in the sources for the first time since the 14th century.
  • Chiesa Madre was built between 1743 and 1756 on parts of an older building that was destroyed in an earthquake in Nardò in the first half of the 18th century.
  • Palazzo Imperiali on Largo Cavalarizza. The oldest parts of the palace are of Pagan origin, it was extended by the Albrizzi family. The Imperiali family added a wing to the palace in the 18th century. There are karst caves and archaeological sites on the site.
  • In the area of Masseria della Marina , the remains of a Neolithic settlement and burial site have been found (6th millennium BC). The findings have been secured and researched by the Soprintendenza archeologica Appuliens and the University of Lecce . A permanent exhibition of the finds has been on display in the Torrione casemates since 2003.
  • The "Grottoes of San Martino" on the Strada provinciale to Torre Colimena contain evidence of human use from the Neolithic to Roman times.
  • The remains of a Roman villa were uncovered near San Francesco.
  • In La Crava the Roman University examines La Sapienza a fossil site.
